family that became Clannad, joining the Irish band in 1979 but dropping out amicably three years later to pursue her own muse. This music, produced in the mid-'80s as the soundtrack to a BBC series, was released as her debut in 1987 and promptly ignored--yet its mix of atmospheric soundscapes and Enya's lush, layered vocals, sung in both English and Gaelic, is the template for her subsequent global hits, beginning withWatermarkthe following year.--Sam Sutherland

Advantages: Soothing compositions. Early taste of Enya's talent Disadvantages: Now sounding slightly dated.

Enya was a member of the Irish band Clannad from 1980 until she decided to go solo in 1982. Apart from the soundtrack to the obscure 1985 film 'The Frog Prince' for which she contributed a few short instrumental pieces, this is Enya's first truly solo work. Enya's debut album, originally released in 1987 as a soundtrack to The Celts TV series, is a real gem. Often overlooked this CD contains some enjoyable material. Although maybe not quite up to the standard of her later material, and at 21 years old is starting to sound a little dated, there is still much to enjoy here for true Enya fans. For me the standout track is definately Triad. Three short pieces joined to form one long song celebrating three historical Irish figures. Other tracks I enjoy on this album are The Celts, I Want Tomorrow (with a bizarre electric guitar solo half way through), Fairytale, March of the Celts and Boadicea. This album laid the foundations for a hugely succesful career and let us know just how talented she is. Die hard Enya fans will know that there is actually two versions of this album available. The original BBC Records release from 1987 featuring a black and white photo of Enya on the front and the 1992 re-release featuring much more colourful album art. The only difference between the two is that track 11 is slightly longer on the rerelease. This album does have a very different sound compared to Enya's later work so if you are just getting into Enya may recommend some of her later albums.
Advantages: Provides comfort and tenderness, deep, and touching. Disadvantages: Less vocals than other albums.
...them, in a way that only music can.
There are some true gems to be found on this CD especially tracks like The Celts, The Sun In The Stream, Portrait(Out Of The Blue), and To Go Beyond.
I'd say this album is definately worth adding to your collection. ...

Reviews which might be of interest for "Celts, The - Enya"
Advantages: It's Enya. Even her weaker music is better than a lot of stuff out there. Disadvantages: Short running time.
After what had come before I was slightly dissapointed with this album. After the masterpiece that was 'The Memory of Trees' I was expecting a similar album. The first thing that struck me is the overall length.
Coming in at just under 40 minutes it is Enya's shortest album to date (disregarding the original 1987 BBC soundtrack CD 'The Celts' which comes in a couple of minutes shorter) There is also a less unique feel to the album and a more general pop orientated sound. Standout tracks for me are 'Flora's Secret', 'One by One' and 'Lazy Days'. The instrumental 'Silver Inches' is also pleasant but at a mere 1 minute 37 seconds it could have been much more.
I bought this album as I am a die-hard Enya fan and will buy anything she releases. People who have just discovered her music are better off buying one of her earlier albums or her ...
Advantages: relaxing, removes the stress of life Disadvantages: none
I have recently purchased the Paint the Sky with Stars album by Enya which is subtitled as the best of Enya.
I bought the CD at WHSMITH for a purchase price of £14.99 . I could have perhaps got it a little cheaper ,but as I was passing they got my money on this occasion !
Moving onto the album itself.
Well it's a top quality compilation as you'd expect from a talented artist such as Enya. This CD is so relaxing , and stress relieving - just what you need after a hard day at work !
Whilst Enya is not to everyones taste , there is a place for her in my collection , because she is different.
This CD features songs from all her other albums such as the Celts , and Watermark .
It has 16 songs in total and runs for 57 minutes and 58 seconds !
1. Orinoco Flow - Everyone has surely heard of this whether you are a fan or not ...
For those who enjoy Enya's music this collection has the be heard. In the four disc set you get some of her best songs along with interesting details about each. It comes in a lovely velevt purple case along with attached bok briefly describing each track. I might add that it is a limited edtion with only 200,000 copies made for worldwide relaese. Al songs were picked by Enya herself. She blends her Irish heritige along with other myths and beliefs together into some of the most fantastic music.
On the first disc you get
Watermark-inspired by a poem Enya wrote
Exile- the sad seperation of a loved one
Alderbaran- a celestial song of sorts
March of the Celts-used for the BBC program The Celts but written before the show was aired
Boadicea-The legendary Celtic Queen who lead an uprising aginst the Romans
The Sun in ...
Personnel includes: Enya (vocals, various instruments); Arty McGlynn (electric guitar); Patrick Halling (violin); Liam O'Flionn (Uillean pipes). Includes liner notes by Roma Ryan. THE CELTS is the 1992 re-release of a 1987 album simply titled ENYA, containing 15 selections originally composed for a BBC series of the same name. Although a number of the tracks sound dated, several others, including "To Go Beyond (II)" are notable for how they locate the origins of the classic Enya sound, far removed from earlier Celtic efforts. A tidy, dreamlike piece, "Epona," is about the Horse Goddess, closely connected to Rhiannon, whose birds are said to awaken the dead. The tale of a rebellious ancient queen who poisoned herself, "Boadicea" finds Enya humming over a dark keyboard refrain.
