The perfect portrait

Advantages: Fascinating story, evocative details, beautiful writing
Disadvantages: I didn't want it to end

"A Portrait of a Turkish Family" is an autobiographical work that tells the story of one Ottoman family from the turn of the twentieth century through the First World War and the establishment of Turkey as a republic. Irfan Orga was the eldest of three children; his mother was born into the harem - as were most women of such standing - and married at the age of thirteen. When the book opens, Irfan and his parents and younger brother live with his paternal grandparents and a host of servants. Orga describes an often idyllic childhood with warmth and humour, depicting the childlike vigour of his mother, the haughtiness of his grandmother and the kindness of the servants. One memorable episode describes a trip to the hamam (Turkish baths) with his mother and grandmother that is like a trip to the beach with the servants instructed to ...

Portrait Photography by Mark Cleghorn is a great book!!

Advantages: Show pictures and details about products
Disadvantages: Short book

Portrait Photography by Mark Cleghorn, in my opinion is a great book for those who are just beggining photography or even those who are more seasoned in photography. It helps teach about lighting and posing and must do's for portrait photography. I believe that this is very helpful when a person is either wanting to learn more about photography or learn more about certain products to be used in photography! i believe that if a person is wanting to learn more about lighting, posing, flash, and cameras; this is a great book for learning more. If a person wants to get down to details and basics, this is where to start. This book in my opinion is for anyone wanting to go farther in portrait photography, or learn more about photography in general!! ...

National Portrait Gallery a national treasure

Advantages: Great pictures, fascinating subjects, sheer scale of colection,
Disadvantages: None really. Perhapse too much to take in in a single visit.

Tucked round the corner from the National Gallery on Trafalgar Square you might be forgiven for assuming that the National Portrait Gallery is the poor relation. However the tiny looking front entrance hides a surprisingly big space, divided into six main exhibition spaces. Even with the new gallery 'filling the gap' between the back of the NPG and the National Gallery, there's still only space to show a fraction of their collections, and they still find the time and space for visiting exhibitions as well. Founded in 1856 (although it did not find a permanent home for forty years) the gallery's founding aim was not to collect the greatest examples of the art of portraitures, but to collect portraits of the greatest people - that is was ' to be about history, not about art'. Fortunately they seem to have married to two very ...
