Del Amitri are my all time favourite band so i am always going to be biassed, but this is, in my opinion, an album that shows a true talent. Heartfelt, beautiful lyrics, stunning melodies and Justin Curries beautiful voice just draws you into each and every song. (or maybe thats just me?) To me, every one of these songs tells its own story, albeit not generally a happy one. Yet somehow i still get to the end of this cd feeling lifted and at ease with myself. I think everyone at some point in their lives feels all the things in these songs, if only we could relate them to others so beautifully!
Be my downfall:- About being tempted and wanting to be with someone you shouldn't be with. "and in another situation i could put up a fight, but you will be my downfall tonight". Whether felt over another person or something totally different, most people have at some point wanted something they shouldn't!
Just like a man:- This is a catchy song that on the 1st listen i thought just that, "it's catchy". Then i really listened to the words. It's about
a man who realises just how much he loves the girl who is now with someone else. How he will deal with it "just like a man" by not saying how he feels, but inside he is really hurting.
When you were young:- Probably my least favourite track on this cd if i had to pick one. Still some cracking lyrics though! "They bought your beauty and your soul, then softly sold you back what they stole". About wanting to be something totally different than you are. (i think! Corrections welcome here)
Surface of the moon:- "Without her it might as well be the surface of the moon". I LOVE this song. To quote all my favourite lyrics in this i would need to quote the entire song. It's beautiful!! About love, but more than that. About remembering places and everything so much differently to how they actually are. "Everythings now a replica of what it used to be" "So on the ancient trails of our coupling, in the places we used to meet, i am amazed by the lack of memories that i thought would flow through me. And the riverside where we first kissed is now being reduced, to a phoney old world market where only shoppers get seduced" SIMPLY STUNNING!
I won't take the blame:- About getting hurt, being left, not understanding what went wrong. Knowing you love someone and that they no longer love you. "And the steps of this stone church are peppered with confetti hearts, like a million little love affairs waiting to fall apart".
The first rule of love:- About the first feelings of love you get, how they grow and how it can all go so wrong.
The ones that you love lead you nowhere:- About being so desperate to be loved and in love that you will fall for anything that you are told and how it ends in pain.
Always the last to know:- One of the best known Del Amitri songs. About being in love with someone who has cheated and being the last to find out. With a twist at the end as it turns out they were the last to know you cheated.
To last a lifetime:- Having had so much bad news but having someone who makes it all seem ok. "Roll down the window, let me hear the rain. Let me hear her whispering, honey everything is ok".
As soon as the tide comes in:- I really like this song. I love the words, i love the melody and i love the sound of Justin Curries voice on this track. But i know a few people who hate it. I guess its all a question of taste. Anyway, it's about watching the person you love marry someone else and trying to deal with it.
Behind the fool:- About being totally in love with someone, completely. But being too scared to tell them in case they make a fool of you.
Sometimes i just have to say your name:- Beautiful!! About being away from someone and coulnting down the time until you are together. When it gets difficult, just saying their name makes everything ok.
Anyone still here??! Well i could write forever about Del Amitri i think. I think this is one of the finest albums you could hope to own and to me it is a must have. Problem is, it's hard to make it sound anything other than depressing, but it has a totally different effect on me. People always say to me "Del who?", but play the cds and you hear "Oh i like this one, i didn't know they did it". Totally under rated band, totally brilliant albums. My recommendation?? Give them a chance, you won't look back!!
