Evoking these revered soul artists is quite appropriate, since James deftly incorporates elements of these singers' styles into her own bold, funk-inflected R&B music. (Another soul hero, Sam Cooke, is acknowledged on the title track, a cover of his classic hit.)Instead of being carried by samples and slick production, James's 2005 debut is rooted in a full guitar/bass/drums sound that nods to the 1970s, without giving up its more modern edge. In fact, artist-of-the-moment Kanye West handles production duties here, along with Wyclef Jean, Raphael Saadiq, and others, giving James's record the added jolts of energy needed to make it a formidable outing. From the urgent Music to the bass-heavy Rain and the sultry Mistreating Me, this is contemporary R&B for people who think they don't like contemporary R&B.[Reviews]New York Times - Somewhere between Tina Turner and Beth Orton...Essence - ...has that old school feeling that makes you reminisce without feeling old.Vibe - James' husky vocals ring out like a thunderous prayer for love finally answered.n
Advantages: Voice, Lyrics Disadvantages: A bit inconcistant aftet the interlude
...comes in, this track is exactly what is says on the tin. A track about having strength, courage and wisdom. A very flowing track that works very well indeed.
6.) Nature" - 4:24
This is not one of the best tracks on Acoustic Soul as it doesnt really develop as well as some of the others. It has a thumping beat that is accompanied by her guitar and voice. A good track but not as great as the others.
7.) Back to the Middle" (featuring Blue Miller) - 5:11
Back on track with a great track that is the one of the catchiest on the album. It starts with a guitar melody that sounds like it was featured on a Tracy Chapman. This is about the human condition and works well. A beautiful track.
8.) Ready for Love" - 4:28
This brings shivers down my spine. A slow track that has India singing softly and her voice sounds amazing. she has...

Advantages: Uplifting and easy to listen to Disadvantages: none
...I felt compelled to write a review for this - since there is not yet a review and also since this is one of my all time favourite albums!
I first heard this at university when someone living on my corridor used to play it at all hours of the day. Rather than being irritated by this the music really began to grow on me until I got to the point where I really had to go and find out what it was and buy my own copy!
This is in my opinion her best album.
The music is really uplifting. India Arie uses a musical style that is probably best described as neo soul with elements of R&B. The album also has quite a folk feel to some of the tracks - for example "Beautiful".
The most recogniseable track is "Video" which is about the appreciation of beauty other than that which is skin deep. My personal favourite track for both lyrics...

...-out, Tied-up, Strung-out fool for you (but I ain't no more)"
**5. Ann WInley: Watchdog"
Sadly not a soul song about the BBC consumer-interest show but the story of a woman being stalked and spied on "like a watchdog". It's another superb midtempo funky number with some superb 70's porn piano and keyboards (to match Champ666's ex-moustache).
Mark: 4/5
YKSMIWSS: "So go on get out my way/I don't need Columbo on my case!"
**6. Betty Davis: Anti Love Song**
Coming on like an even gruffer Macy Gray this is how you seduce a listener on record. The vocals are huskily whispered, virtually in your ear, about everything Betty doesn't want from a particular man because he's too much of a temptation. Betty pretty much talks her way through this track, but that should deviate from the fact that tune has more rhythm and blues that the current crop...
