Advantages: A well paced novel with good storyline Disadvantages: Definitly female fiction- probably would not appeal to men.
Review of Time For A Change, a novel by Erica James.
I am reviewing the paperback version of the book.
Genre:- Modern Fiction - ISBN: 752843400, 333 pages, jacket price £6.99.
First Published by Orion in 1997, reissued in 1998.
The Plot
The story is set in an English village, in the late 1990's. The novel is written in a very fast moving style, the characters are well drawn and believable and the plot has several twists and turns to keep you turning the pages!
Hilary Parker lives in a small village with her husband David and her children, Phillip and Becky. Hilary is a happy, organised lady, her husband is kind, caring and works very hard as an estate agent. They have a lovely home and their son is a pleasant bright boy who has just started secondary school, their daughter is a handful, a mischievous, willful child ...
Advantages: Voice, Lyrics Disadvantages: A bit inconcistant aftet the interlude
has such a pure and clear voice. One of the best she is ever likely to record in her career. Quite stunning.
9.) Interlude" - 1:24
A common occurence in the genre where they mood of the album changes and there is a little interlude between each mood. a nice interlude for what it's worth.
10.) Always in My Head" - 4:40
This opens with India saying "you're like a cool breeze". This is a great track about when you can't get someone out of your mind. They just have a hold over you and you can't let go. A great subject matter done very well.
11.) I See God in You" - 3:17
This is a funky hip hop track which has some nice background sounds that work well with the beat. Not the best on the the album but still woth listening to.
12.) Simple" - 3:26
This has a taut hip hop bassline and India comes in humming. This track ...
Advantages: Readable enough Disadvantages: Characters boring, sub-plot absolutely ridiculous, I found it difficult to read
I bought Time for a Change from a charity shop when I was looking for new books. I'd never read anything by Erica James before but I'd heard the name and thought this sounded alright from the blurb on the back, so decided to give it a go.
~The Story~
Hilary Parker lives in the small village of Hulme Welford with her husband David, and two children, Philip, and Becky, a boisterous young girl. She has a busy life, being a member of the PTA and taking French lessons in the evening, but she is happy with her life.
Everything changes for Hilary when one morning she finds a receipt for dinner for two in her husbands pocket. Not only that, but he has been muttering another woman's name in his sleep.
Realising he is having an affair, Hilary turns to neighbour Cindy, who's husband has cheated on her many times. Cindy advises ...

Album Notes
Personnel: Leela James (vocals). Producers: Kanye West; Wyclef Jean; Raphael Saadiq; James Poyser; Chucky Thompson; Mtume; Avila Brothers; Leela James; Jerry Duplessis. Recording information: Platinum Sound, New York, NY; Bennett Studios, Englewood, NJ. Within the opening minutes of Leela James's debut, A CHANGE IS GONNA COME, the full-voiced performer name-checks both Chaka Khan and Marvin Gaye. Evoking these revered soul artists is quite appropriate, since James deftly incorporates elements of these singers' styles into her own bold, funk-inflected R&B music. (Another soul hero, Sam Cooke, is acknowledged on the title track, a cover of his classic hit.) Instead of being carried by samples and slick production, James's 2005 debut is rooted in a full guitar/bass/drums sound that nods to the 1970s, without giving up its more modern edge. In fact, artist-of-the-moment Kanye West handles production duties here, along with Wyclef Jean, Raphael Saadiq, and others, giving James's record the added jolts of energy needed to make it a formidable outing. From the urgent "Music" to the bass-heavy "Rain" and the sultry "Mistreating Me," this is contemporary R&B for people who think they don't like contemporary R&B.
