Ok, this is quite a tricky CD to write a review, mainly bacause i dont have any of their other stuff, so i cant really compare it.
Another one of their CD's is called Awake which I'm told would be more up my street, because it is all of there own music, with normal track times (A Change Of Seasons only has 5 tracks, the first of which is about 23 minutes long, and 2 other tracks which are about 10)
Tracks:
The first track is in seven parts, as it is very long. Each part has a name, which is given below: i) The crimson sunrise ii) Innocence iii) Carpe diem iv) The darkest of winters v) Another world vi) The inevitable summer vii) The crimson sunset
Note, tracks 2 - 5 were recorded live at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club in London
1. A change of seasons The best track on the album. Nearly 25 minutes long, this is an excellent example of prog metal, despite the fact that it's nearly 10 years old now. The introductory riff is extremely catchy, and the breaks inbetween sections give the piece a sense of direction.
2. Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding Originally by Elton John, Dream Theater have covered this extremely well. The keyboard sections are fantastic, and the guitar adds to the harmony perfectly. I feel that La Brie's vocals suit the song really well.
3. Perfect Strangers - will add this description very soon.
4. The Rover/Achilles Last Stand/The Song Remains The Same - will add this description very soon.
5. The Big Medley - will add this description very soon.
Band Members:
James La Brie - Vocals (and tambourine) John Myung - Bass guitar and Chapman Stick Mike Portnoy - Drums, Percussion and Backing Vocals John Petrucci - Guitar and Backing Vocals Jordan Rudess - Keyboards and Synthesizers
Overall, a good quality album, but the only track really worth listening to is the title track. It's available in most good music stores from £10.99, but can be found in Martian Records for around £8 and the same sort of price on the internet.
The lyrics for the first track are in the inlay, but no other lyrics are included, just recording details. This is because all the other tracks are cover off other artists so dream theater aren't allowed to print their lyrics.
Other albums: I would highly recommend Awake, Falling Into Infinity and Metropolis Part Two: Scenes From A Memory. The best album to buy first is Awake, as it will enable you to get used to Dream Theater's diverse sound (from prog metal to power ballads). Once you're sure you like their music, then I recommend you buy Metropolis Part Two, Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence and Train Of Thought, which are three excellent and musically complex albums that follow on from one another, telling various stories of people's lives.
Thanks for reading, and thanks to Sarah for helping me to write this review, who is an avid Dream Thater fan. Her ciao name is moiralily.
Please r/r/c and tell me what you think of the reivew.
