Sir Paul is an elder statesman now, butChaos and Creation in the Back Yardfinds McCartney ... more
in considered and tastefully restrained form--dignfied and old--penning songs worthy of his finest hour. McCartney crafts this collection of songs with exquisite balance, lining up haunting chimes and heartfelt lyrics ("Riding to Vanity Fair") alongside pounding"Hey Bulldog"-esquechords and eerily Beatles-ish multi-tracked vocals ("Promise to You Girl", "Fine Line") and, most impressively, distinctively new yet timeless gems of songcraft ("Anyway", "Jenny Wren"). Emotionally, the songs onChaos and Creationmanage to avoid being mired in over-sentimentality while retaining a powerful, understated sincerity. Poignant though it is, however, this record is essentially positive and hopeful: Sir Paul's playfulness beams through in his intonation which picks up a line such as "It's not right/In your life/Too much rain" and breathes life and optimism into its words. "English Tea" completes the package, an unrepentantly twee serving of Anglo-nostalgia with recorder.Chaos and Creation in the Back Yarddisplays the full range of Sir Paul McCartney's inimitable talent, presenting listeners with one of his finest solo albums. --Jonathan DaviesMore to Explore1 ~ The Beatles(CD)In Red Square ~ Paul McCartney(DVD)High in the Clouds ~ McCartney, Ardagh&Dunbar(Hardcover)Working Class Hero ~ John Lennon(2CD)See more McCartney products

Advantages: Paul's back on form! Disadvantages: Some tracks do go on-and-on.
...watch out.

TRACK THREE 'Jenny Wren'
I heard this was dedicated to Heather... who will NEVER be Linda... But OK she's here now. Paul said that this song was "Blackbird's daughter". If you haven't heard BLACKBIRD listen to it NOW! It's on the White Album! I like this track ALOT, but it's not the best.
TRACK FOUR 'At the Mercy'
A bit repetitive for me, and it's another mellow track. Not a great one, not much to say. more
Before I start I must warn you that I AM a Beatles fan, I'm also one of those who prefer PAUL to JOHN... So watch out.

TRACK TWO 'How Kind of You' Nice song, too much to say about it, it's OK but not a fantastic song. Quiet and mellow and layed-back. Good one to crash out to. Nice chord changes and tidy vocals.
TRACK THREE 'Jenny Wren' I heard this was dedicated to Heather... who will NEVER be Linda... But OK she's here now. Paul said that this song was "Blackbird's daughter". If you haven't heard BLACKBIRD listen to it NOW! It's on the White Album! I like this track ALOT, but it's not the best.
TRACK FOUR 'At the Mercy' A bit repetitive for me, and it's another mellow track. Not a great one, not much to say.
TRACK FIVE ' Friends to Go' Nice song here, good one to play on the 'ol acoustic!
TRACK SIX ' English Tea' This is my personal favorite! When you listen to it you'll be thinking 'ARE YOU MAD!?', but trust me... this song it so quaint it'll make your eyes water LOL! VERY TWEE!
TRACK SEVEN 'Too Much Rain' I love the chord changes in this song. When you hear Paul's solo stuff you realise what a HUGE influence he was in The Beatles... I know that's an obvious statement but still...
TRACK EIGHT 'Certain Softness' This song is a fantastic chill-out song. Very summer in the sun, happy-smileeeee song. It's another great acoustic track that you have to lean and play!
TRACK NINE 'Riding to Vanity Fair' A no-fuss song that does seem to keep on going-and-going, don't get me wrong it's a good listener, but nothing like 'Fine Line' and 'English Tea'.
TRACK TEN 'Follow Me' To be honest quite boring.
TRACK ELEVEN 'Promise to you Girl' Reminds me a bit of a few Queen tracks, I'm referring here to the harmonies used. Starts off all sad and then (in the typical PMC stylee) kicks into a piano led happy get-up and dance song! A wicked solo my new Les Paul is going to like this track!
TRACK TWELVE 'This Never Happened Before' Like 'Follow Me', it doesn't grab my attention enough. I drift off and start thinking about other things...
TRACK THIRTEEN 'Anyway' When saw that this track was over 7mins I thought whoa, get a cuppa on. Then after about 3mins this track finishes, and I thought that's wierd then this kool tune begins, which changed my view on this track. The tune is AMAZING and does actually rival the full tracks on the album.
I would recommend this album to everyone! Although I've said some songs do send me off, I wouldn't say that, that puts too much of a black mark on the album. I'm still loving his chord changes, his skill on the piano, he can still reach the high notes (if you ask me) and I think Beatles fans will also appreciate the album! A great buy!

Album Notes
This 13-track release contains the songs "Riding To Vanity Fair," "Too Much Rain," and more. That 2005's CHAOS & CREATION IN THE BACKYARD arrived as a dramatic return to form for Paul McCartney is something of an oversimplification. The fact is, dodgy orchestral and electronic side projects aside, solo Macca's only true fallow period was the mid-'80s, and the three albums prior to CHAOS were all solid, not un-Beatlesque affairs. That said, it's impossible to deny that this is one of Paul's finest post-Wings releases. He mines Fabs-friendly melodies and arrangements unabashedly (occasionally with tongue firmly in cheek), and who better to do so. Part of the reason for the album's resonance is the presence of Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich, the first man since George Martin with the gall to make McCartney work for his money. (Paul's basically a one-man band throughout, for the first time since McCARTNEY II.) A deeper reason lies in the obvious emotional depths McCartney plumbs, leaving his trademark happy-face/Silly Love Songs persona far behind and betraying an unprecedented level of melancholy and introspection. Revisionists who claim the spirit of the Beatles died with Mark David Chapman's bullet in 1980 should only wish that, had John Lennon lived, he'd still be making music as aesthetically relevant as this 25 years down the line.
Album Reviews
Rolling Stone (No. 983, p.101) - 4 out of 5 stars - "...[T]he freshest-sounding McCartney album in years...." Entertainment Weekly (No. 840, p.84) - "...[W]hat we're hearing is an artist honestly following his muse..." - Grade: B Mojo (p.98) - 3 stars out of 5 - "'How Kind Of You' and 'Vanity Fair' cleverly pit Macca's perma-optimistic lilt against mournful, downbeat tapestries." Uncut (p.94) - 4 stars out of 5 - "[With] richly layered song patterns that meander with deceptively aimless purpose from beginning to end, often sounding as though they're coalescing on the spot..."
