Advantages: Excellent backing tracks, competent vocals, a couple of strong pop hits Disadvantages: Not much in the way of soul, some dull tracks, all rather dated now
on the radio. What I didn?t realise at the time was they were formed specifically to cash in on the northern soul market that was so popular in the 70s.
The Pearls
The Pearls were two session singers who had been working steadily since the late 1950s in one of the UK?s first girl bands, the Vernon Girls. Lyn Cornell and Ann Simmons then pursued solo careers with some minor success during the sixties, with Cornell reaching number 30 with a cover version of the song ?Never on a Sunday? in 1960 but they found session work and working as backing singers more lucrative after failed solo singles releases.
In 1972 producer Phil Swern decided he wanted to record a cover version of Martha Reeves & The Vandellas? B-side ?Third Finger Left Hand? to cash in on the song?s popularity on the northern soul scene.
At that time there wasn?t much ...
Advantages: New and different, multiplayer, drums Disadvantages: can be embaressing, no online band world tour
Rock Band is a step in the right direction for any musical gamer. Obviously a move onwards from the Guitar Hero franchise with the inclusion of a drum kit and a microphone. The guitar is practically the same as any of the guitar hero guitars, but with a few tweaks such as the solo buttons which are very difficult to use and aren't really needed. Therefore the guitar isn't really a must have if you already have a guitar hero guitar. However if you don't then get the whole band set as the variety offered by having so many instruments is endless and playing with friends or online is one of the best things about the game. The solo careers are good too with a good tracklist which ranges dramatically and also new downloadable tracks every week in case you get bored of the same tunes over and over again.
The guitar on expert is easier than ...
Advantages: Has some of their best known hits, has some special extras not found on other albums. Disadvantages: There are sometimes too many versions of the same song, which I got bored with easily.
'The BBC Sessions' is a compilation album by The Beautiful South. Released in 2007, it is a good mixture of all their greatest hits; 'Sail this ship alone', Song for whoever', Old red eyes is back', 'perfect 10', 'dumb' and my personal favourite 'a little time'.
This is actually a really good 2 disc special to have in your collection if you are a fan of the band as there are some really nice treats like the bands own version of 'use it up wear it out'!
The unusual thing about this album is that it has 4 different versions of 'You keep it all in' and 2 versions of 'Old red eyes is back'. This is really good if you are a fan of those particular songs and enjoy hearing slightly different versions of each, but I must admit that the charm of this wore off pretty quickly for me and I ended up skipping these tracks after a while ...

Album Notes
Incredible String Band: Robin Williamson, Mike Heron. The discovery of these tapes was made in 1985. They finally saw release a dozen years later--a full 30 years after they were recorded. THE CHELSEA SESSIONS 1967 is essentially a collection of demo recordings that were made just prior to THE 500 SPIRITS OR THE LAYERS OF THE ONION. The Incredible String Band recorded its first album in 1966 as a trio. Clive Palmer left shortly thereafter. This album is essentially the first recording by Robin Williamson and Mike Heron as a duo. What's most exciting about this album is that fans can witness these songs take creative flight for the first time. Most of these selections found their way onto subsequent studio recordings, but there are also a few unreleased songs, including Williamson's "Born in Your Town" and Heron's "Lover Man," which was later recorded by Al Stewart.
