Album Notes: Prolific Cornish electronic producer Luke Vibert returns with 'Chicago Detroit Redruth', the third album to be released under his own name and his first for Mike Paradinas' Planet Mu. Renowned for his eclectic mix of electronic genres 'Chicago Detroit Redruth' is no exception, a blistering mix of drum 'n' bass, breaks, trip hop and acid, the album cements Vibert's place as one of the UK's most original producers alongside Aphex Twin and Squarepusher.
Album Reviews: The Wire (p.74) - "Vibert creates an efficient dance chassis for each track and flies in vintage samples and toytown melodies from Perrey's archive..."
Advantages: The Original London Revival in all its glory Disadvantages: Confusing if you haven't seen the show
...I purchased this CD fairly cheap, having not seen the show and when I first listened to it, I didn't warm to it much, so it stayed unplayed for a long while. Then I went and saw the touring production of Chicago and it suddenly started to make sense. I got the CD out, dusted it off and tried again and it was a much more rewarding experience.
This CD and the production from which it comes is a lot different to the recent Chicago movie. The songs are the same (aside from the additions), but the style of it is much darker and more sinister and this is reflected in the music on this CD. I don't know why this should be, but the music featured here is just a bit more menacing.
A lot of the credit for this fine CD (alongside Kander and Ebb) goes to Ruthie Henshall and Ute Lemper who positively sparkle as Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly...

Advantages: Great songs to sing-a-long to! Disadvantages: Pointless bonus tracks
...This CD is great for all those who enjoyed the musical Chicago or those who enjoy jazzy musicals.
I think that this CD is great value for money. It is for sale on Amazon UK for £4.97. For this price you get 18 tracks. 16 of the tracks are fantastic but the two bonus tracks I find unnecessary.

Advantages: Fantastic music Disadvantages: May not appeal to all tastes
...I have been a great fan of the musical 'Chicago' for years. When I heard the rumours that it was to be made into a film with Catherine Zeta-Jones playing Velma Kelley I was a little skeptical. Not because I felt she didnt have the acting abilities but I was unsure whether she had the singing voice.
How wrong I was.
I went to see the film on opening night and found the whole film a real treat. The musical numbers were cinematically breathtaking.
Catherine Zeta-Jones hit the audiences hard with her sexy, husky jazz club singer voice, I was in awe. Although Catherine being from Wales I guess I should have known
Renee Zellwegger is as equally good in her singing roles although I felt that her numbers did need a little oomph. I somehow felt she lacked the same sex appeal as Catherine.
A couple of days later I found myself...
