Fu Manchu ("Swami's Last Command"), among others, highlight this unusual soundtrack for an independent film about a day in the life of a Chicago cabdriver. Apparently, it's a muted, sordid affair, since none of the tunes featured here approach anything near anthemic heights. Instead these are sonic-noir songs that shift quietly like sand as weight is applied. The unreleased Pearl Jam tune (a studio fave from the Vs. sessions) is Eddie Vedder whispering and getting philosophical. Sparklehorse ("Hammering the Cramps") is outright eerie. Helmet's Page Hamilton offers up only a minute of pure sound. Brad, the Grifters, and Hovercraft (featuring Mrs. Eddie Vedder) round out the package with intriguing--if slight--contributions. --Rob O'Connor

*not featured in the film.
Throughout the film and most of the songs Catherine Zeta-Jones is the clear star and it is obvious that not only has she been to stage school, but also that she has performed in the theatre. She has an incredibley powerful, but rich sounding voice. Renee Zelwegger is slightly weaker, but in fairness to her she did learn to sing and dance for the part and definitely holds her own.
There were only 2 songs on this album that I really didn't like. Love is a Crime, by Anastacia and Cell Block Tango (He Had it Comin') by Queen Latifah and Lil' Kim. They are not featured in the movie itself (well maybe over the credits) and don't really seem to fit with the style of the film let alone the rest of the music. I mean after an entire musical of jazzy music no-one really wants to hear Queen Latifah rapping and ruining one of the best songs on the CD, by doing her own version of it, especailly after she was so good singing When You're Good To Mama.
My favourites have to be And All That Jazz, When You're Good to Mama, Razzle Dazzle and Cell Block Tango. I probably like And All That Jazz just because it is the first song and it starts to set the scene, the whole soundtrack has a fairly brassy feel to it, but this song has more so than the others, this is no doubt due to the overture before the words kick in. Queen Latfiah is fanatastic in When You're Good to Mama, she just belts it out, and its nice to see that she can actually sing even though she spends most of her time rapping. Cell Block Tango is brilliant. Not only are there some really good lines within the song (which is a bout how the girls are not actually murderers)....such as... 'and then he ran into my knife, he ran into my knife 10 times.' and ' you know some guys just can't hold their arsenic'. As well as this I think the way in which the song builds is quite clever and it has various layers of singing.
Class is only a song that I have discovered recently, possibly due to the fact that its not in the actual film, but at the moment the more I'm listening to it the more I like it. It's a clever song in which Cartherine Zeta -Jones and Queen Latifah pick apart society, when they themselves are not exactly prime examples of classy people!!
I can't actually place I Move On anywhere in the film at the moment (it just started playing through my headphones....didn't really regognise it at all....shows you how much I flick between songs!!) still a good song though.
Even if you have seen the film, you may not like the soundtrack without the visual extravaganza that is the film, and it probably is a good idea to see the film beforehand so that you might have some idea about what is going on, but I wouldn't say it were neccessary.
Whatever the case I would highly reccommend it , but I know it might not be to everyone's taste.
Advantages: Some great performances of a fun set of songs Disadvantages: Bonus tracks which are anything but a bonus
...just sounds peculiar for a Chicago lawyer. The biggest surprise of the CD is Queen Latifah, whose rendition of the saucy 'When You're Good To Mama' is perfect. She also duets hilariously with Catherine Zeta-Jones in the cut number 'Class', which is included on the soundtrack CD and is not to be missed.
However, Queen Latifah is also involved in the biggest disappointment of the CD - the abysmal 'bonus' tracks at the end. A new Kander and Ebb number ... ...original songs. Then Queen Latifah and friends (Li'l Kim and Macy Gray) contribute their version of the 'Cell Block Tango' in their usual musical idiom, and it is simply hideous. The song which is the best track on the CD becomes the worst track as well in this ill-conceived cover version. Anastacia's 'Love is a Crime' is passable, but doesn't fit musically with either the songs or the score of the film, although the lyrics do at least have a bearing ...

I think that this CD is great value for money. It is for sale on Amazon UK for £4.97. For this price you get 18 tracks. 16 of the tracks are fantastic but the two bonus tracks I find unnecessary.
Track listings
1. Overture / And All That Jazz - Catherine Zeta-Jones, Female Chorus, Male Chorus 2. Funny Honey - Renee Zellweger, John C. Reilly, Colm Feore
3. When You're Good ... ...and Taye Diggs.
I think that the actresses and actors sing really well in Chicago but Catherine Zeta Jones is fantastic. Renee Zellweger is a little weaker than Catherine but is still great.
Overall I would recommend this CD to anyone who enjoys Chicago the musical.
Enjoy!! ...

I would recommend this to any fan of Garth Brooks, and to anybody in the mood for some pop-rock done very well. It is obvious from this that the man's influences lie outside the George Jones and Johnny Cash he has been compared to at his height.
Give it a try, even just as an oddity.

Music and lyrics written by John Kander and Fred Ebb. Original score composed by Danny Elfman. CHICAGO has a long and varied history; it began life in the '20s as a play about a showgirl named Roxie Hart, the character whose name was used as the title for a '40s movie inspired by the show. In the '70s, Broadway composers Kander and Ebb (CABARET, NEW YORK, NEW YORK) wrote the songs for a musical version focusing on the '20s-jazz angle and capitalizing on the murder-and-sex theme, and Bob Fosse fleshed the whole thing out to great success. The late-'90s Broadway revival of the show was even more successful and gave rise to a film version featuring Richard Gere, Renee Zellweger, and Catherine Zeta-Jones, movie stars not known for singing. The film turned out to be a huge hit, and the actors handle their vocal chores admirably, as borne out on this soundtrack disc. Zeta-Jones and Zellweger handle their respective roles of vamp and showgirl well. While Gere will probably never have a solo singing career, his quirky, character-filled singing is perfectly in the style of many male vocalists of the '20s and works just fine. The songs are full of surprise left hooks and catchy refrains, melding early jazz with showtunes in a seamless manner. While the contemporary pop tunes by Anastacia and Queen Latifah tacked onto the end mar one's suspension of disbelief somewhat, this is nevertheless an impressive and entertaining affair.
