...I have never mastered the art of making gravy from scratch. Don't get me wrong, I can do it if I'm actually following a recipe in a book, but make me rely on my own skills and I always seem to get some thin, oily, flavourless slop Gravy is just one of those things I'm no good at . Lucky for me then that I don't have to be good at it - there are various instant gravies available, the best known brand being Bisto, which has been around since 1908. They have a variety of flavours, - chicken, lamb, vegetable (as well as doing a white sauce) but my particular favourite is beef . Making this is incredibly simple, simply put 4 heaped teaspoons of these dull grey looking granules into a job, and add half a pint of boiling water , and stir well. ...Regular readers of my reviews will no doubt already know I am a huge fan of Blackpool and that I travel there on a regular basis. Now I am the first to admit that when I visit Blackpool it is more about the place itself than the accommodation and therefore I usually just opt for a very inexpensive B&B but I do on occasions like to treat myself to a luxury break in a hotel and have stayed in the Big Blue hotel that overlooks the Pleasure beach (already reviewed) and also in the Imperial Hotel which is what I am going to tell you a bit about here. I stayed in the Imperial in late 2004 so I do apologise if there have been changes that I fail to mention in this review but I am assured after talking to friends who I recommended the hotel to and are recently back from their stay that it is every bit as good now as I told them it was then... Advantages: Oh so heavenly!
Disadvantages: They taste better on the second day, but they're so tempting!

...I take my role as "housewife" very seriously. I'm so 1950s, it hurts. Anyway, home-baking has now become an integral part of my routine, and you'll always find fresh-baked cakes and biscuits in our kitchen. I have small children, and shudder with horror at all the additives shop-bought treats contain. It's not good for my figure, but I'm saving my children from chemical nasties. That's how I'm justifying it anyway. So, gingernut biscuits. I found this recipe fairly recently, and it's going down a storm in the Douthwaite household. It's too good to keep to myself, and it's so simple that even my three-year-old can do most of it (except the hot stuff. I'm not that irresponsible!).
