...This year, as we do every Christmas, we will bring out our copy of the CD A Medieval Christmas. We will listen to it, I, with a glass of single malt Scotch, my wife with a glass of Sherry and some minced pies and we will settle back and listen to A Medieval Christmas, as the Christmas lights twinkle and the cat and the cockatiel doze. The singing is provided by Pro Cantione Antiqua, which is made up of Charles Brett and Timothy Penrose (they are the countertenors) James Griffiths, Neil Jenkins and Ian Partridge (tenors.) Brian Etheridge and Michael George (basses). The musical accompaniment is provided by the Medieval Wind Ensemble, made up of Peter Davies (recorders, doucaine, bombard and bagpipes, Jonathon Morgan (recorders, doucaine, shawm and sackbut) and Mark Brown (tabor and timbrel. Advantages: New (?) wave of music to most of us
Disadvantages: Not to everybodys ears

.... Their history goes back to at least 1363 and was only abolished by act of parliament in 1836. In their time they were important people. Sometimes you can be watching a programme on the TV, It may be News or Current Affairs and the item is about some medieval document or building. You may be aware of the background music, how it has changed to a brassier and rawer type of music. This is the sort of thing. This is the original Popular Music, The music of the People and the Court. The CD has a total playing time of 57'06".I have tried to identify what each type of tune is from the notes with the CD. Advantages: More exciting music
Disadvantages: Not for everybody

...The people of the middle ages and the renaissance liked gorgeous colours in their cloths, sharp contrasts in their paintings, highly-flavoured dishes at their tables. In their music they liked sounds which were bright and uncompromising. All the families of instruments possessed the remarkable individual timbres which vanished as the modern orchestra developed. To regard these instruments as primitive forerunners of today’s counterparts is to do a vast disservice they represent 500 years development by the end of sixteenth century. After 1600 instruments had to be capable of playing both loud and soft. The distinction between indoor and outdoor music disappeared and the instruments capable of only one dynamic with them. Others were transformed. The shwam was refined into the oboe, the dulcian into the bassoon. That is a paraphrase... Read review
