Advantages: One of America's best, most underrated 70s bands Disadvantages: None
...LynyrdSkynyrd were without equal in their heyday as the kings of southern boogie, and it's nothing short of tragic that they should have been all but wiped out in a plane crash in 1977. It's also ironic that their best-known song, "Free Bird" was an undiscovered classic at the time, perhaps partly because of its 9-minute length, and only became a recognised classic towards the end of the 70s. This retrospective includes a live version of the song, and some of their best studio cuts. "Sweet Home Alabama" is their next best-known number, and manages to be a good-time country rocker while delivering a tongue-in-cheek (?) put-down to Neil Young in the lyrics, "Saturday Night Special", "Call Me The Breeze" and "Gimme Back My Bullets" are all gems waiting to be discovered....

When LynyrdSkynyrd were at their peak in the 1970s it became very trendy to embrace all things southern American, leading to Southern Comfort becoming the fashionable drink amongst the cool young dudes who are now the fat bald generation who castigate the youth of today for their anti social ways with binge drinking. Sorry kids, we were doing it years ago, so that's the last dregs of cool gone from binge drinking.
This CD was bought from Woolworths in Swanage for £7.97 which for a new release is pretty reasonable.
The cover booklet gives all the lyrics and a potted history of the band, where we are reminded that the band did not always travel...

Advantages: Most of the covers are great Disadvantages: Some covers may not suit everyone's tastes, no real new songs
...) movement, but you have legends like Thin Lizzy, Black Sabbath and Blue Oyster Cult on it, as well as some artists you wouldn't expect a group like Metallica to cover at first glance, like Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, LynyrdSkynyrd, and Bob Seger. But all of them are covered on here, with Metallica's expert touch added to them.
On this disc, I must say that there were a few songs that I don't particularly like very much, and those are the two Discharge covers at either end of the disc. Both were too short and too simple for my tastes, as they just seemed to be the same riff over and over again, which is below Metallica's usual high playing standard.
My favourite tracks on this disc are Turn the Page and Whiskey in the Jar. Although I have not heard the original, Turn the Page is a great track that, when I heard it originally (before I...
