It's aptly titled, as the videos follow Rush's 30-year evolution in fashion, performance and visual representation. Loyalists may wish for a lengthier selection, but with remastered Dolby 2-channel stereo, this 63-minute disc clearly improves upon the VHS release. The in-studio performance of "Tom Sawyer" is new (previous versions were from theExit, Stage Leftconcert video), and although hidden bonus videos of "The Enemy Within" and "Afterimage" are inaccurately listed as "previously unreleased" (they appeared on the 1985 compilationThrough the Camera Eye), their inclusion here is welcome (and accessible by selecting the "Rush Chronicles" logo on the DVD's "Play Videos" menu). Aimee Mann makes a playful appearance on "Time Stand Still". This is recommended to Rush purists only, but on those terms, it's essential viewing. --Jeff Shannon

Rush are classed as a ‘progressive’ rock band. Over the last 20 or so years they have produced dozens of albums; their music has progressed from simple heavy rock to a more mixed rock that mixes ballad, heavy rock and rock anthem.

I will not review every track on the album, suffice it to say that they are all very good and many different styles are inherent in the recordings, however I will review several of the key tracks….
Fly by Night ----------------
This is typical of the early Rush style; a no nonsense rock ballad that is very catchy and has superlative drumming and guitar work. When in doubt about Rush, play this!
Lakeside Park -----------------------
Lakeside park will appeal to many with another catchy tune combining with Rush’s power to produce a great song. This song appeals to people who like to get caught up in childhood memories.
Bastille Day ------------------
A sad and dark song that portrays the fury and anger of the French revolution. Similar in style to many other rush songs it features strong chord work and much heavy guitar. It is a powerful example of early Rush rock!
2112 -------
Perhaps on of the most important Rush songs; with a sci-fi theme this song (and the album) started to show the transition of rush from a pure rock band to a progressive rock band that combines many different styles in one song.
The trees -------------
Rush began to develop a style that evolved over the course of several albums. Many songs started quietly, almost Ballad like, and then with the same tune, turned into a heavy rock ballad. This song metaphorically portrays the struggle in the forest between the Oaks and the Maples, the song is direct, starting with the following lines:-
‘There is unrest in the forest, There is trouble in the trees, For the maples want more sunlight, And the Oaks ignore their pleas.’
this simple verse somehow epitomize the struggles we all have when trying to get equality. This track is a very fast song that has deep lyrics and wonderful guitar solos. This song also shows how talented the band really are with some excellent examples of quality music.
Tom Sawyer ----------------
Probably the bands most famous song, and my wife’s personal favorite. This song is fascinating in that it seems to be slightly off beat; this rhythm combined with the intriguing words make this a very stimulating and exciting song. Again this song represents a transition for Rush as they begin experimenting with interesting beats and rhythms.
The Big Money & Time Stand Still ---------------------------------------------
Although I am not a great fan of later rush, there are several good songs. As the band attempted to move into the 80s and 90s they produced a few albums that somehow lost Rush – trying to be perhaps to commercial or add a kind of ‘big band’ sound they became over produced and the music became poor in comparison to early Rush. However, The Big Money and Time Stand Still are a couple of good tracks that seem to have a similar feel and sound to early rush even if they are a little synthesized. In this period the band experimented by adding keyboards and other instruments to their sound.
Conclusion ------------------
This album has an excellent cross section of Rush’s songs giving a new listener a good indication of what Rush are all about. Many existing Rush fans won’t really need to buy this as they already have all the albums!! I bought this as all my albums are vinyl and I didn’t have any Rush to play on CD!
The future --------------
As Rush have had an sabbatical, both Geddly Lee and Alec Lifeson have produced solo albums. While Lifeson’s attempt was interetig, and was an attempt to break away from the Rush sound it was not particularly awe inspiring (The solo album was actually produced by a band called Victor). Lee’s album however was very good. Although Lee didn’t really move from the tried and tested Rush formula, it does give us hope that when Rush return it will be in the old 70s type of sound!
Advantages: Shows the progression of sound from Rush Disadvantages: none
Chronicles is a CD designed for Rush fans to see how the sound of Rush has progressed over their many successful years.
Songs on the CD include timeless hits such as Tom Sawyer, Red Barchetta, Distant Early Warning and Show Don't Tell.
The first CD in the boxed set is not as good in my opinion as the second. This is probably because I prefer songs with thoughtful and provoking lyrics. This is not to say that the lyrics aren't thoughtful, they are, ... ...Distant Early Warning.
Perhaps one of the best songs on CD1 is 2112 which is also an album by Rush.
This was the first CD from the band I bought. I had heard of Rush and wanted to sample their music. The CD was their version of the greatest hits they have had. It is a brilliant CD for first time buyers of Rush music and after you have listened to the CD you will want to purchase other albums by them. It was competitively priced at £17.99 which ...

Conclusion
With many more good songs on the album, including an anthem from their best album (arguably) 2112, this album show a great cross section of Rush and chronicles how their music became more complicated and more driven by Geddy Lee as the years went by. The three members are all artist, all superb musicians in their own right. The album is a great one to own for those just discovering Rush who do not want to buy all their early albums. ...
Rush: Geddy Lee (vocals, bass, synthesizer); Alex Lifeson (acoustic guitars, synthesizers); Neil Peart (drums, percussion); John Rutsey (drums). Additional personnel: Aimee Mann (vocals). Producers include: Rush, Terry Brown, Peter Henderson, Peter Collins, Rupert Hine. Compilation producer: Bill Levenson. Includes liner notes by John Swenson. All tracks have been digitally remastered. This 2 disc set contains a 10 page booklet, historical annotations and photographs. Also contains live versions of "What You're Doing" and "A Passage To Bangkok," both appearing on CD for the first time. Released in 1990, the two-CD set CHRONICLES was the first "best of" compilation from Rush, spanning their recording career from 1974's self-titled debut until 1990's PRESTO. Although the RETROSPECTIVE VOL.1 & 2 discs from 1997 contained a lengthier and slightly different track listing (and boasted better sound due to remastering), CHRONICLES is still a superb collection of Rush's hits. Rush is primarily known as a progressive band with a leaning towards science fiction themes, but many forget that their roots lay in the bluesy riff-rock of Led Zeppelin and Cream. Look no further than the early cuts "Finding My Way," "Working Man," and a live take of "What You're Doing" for the proof. Drummer/lyricist Neil Peart replaced original member John Rutsey after the debut RUSH, and the band immediately shifted direction, developing their trademark sound, with an emphasis on more technically and lyrically challenging material. Some of the finest hard rock ever recorded can be found on CHRONICLES--"Closer To The Heart," "Tom Sawyer," "The Spirit Of Radio," "New World Man," "A Passage To Bangkok (live)," and "Distant Early Warning," to name a few. There's simply not a weak track included on CHRONICLES, which makes it a fine collection of Rush classics.
