It's always nice to get a lot for your money. You certainly get that with Clash on Broadway, a 3-CD, 63 track celebration of the perhaps most genuine of punk bands. Put quite simply, if you want to have practically the whole catalogue of Joe Strummer and Mick Jones' work, you should buy this album.
Each CD deals with the three distinct stages of the Clash's career, and is a tribute to their longevity compared to their contemporary acts. CD 1 is what they began with, the agression of 77-style punk, and their first flirtations with reggae. The whole of their debut album is contained on this CD, along with favourites like 'Complete Control', and there are live versions of 'English Civil War' and 'I Fought The Law', taken from the Rude Boy tour, and previously unreleased. There's also demos of 'Janie Jones' and 'Career Opportunities'.
CD 2 contains the best parts of London Calling, as well as the previously unreleased 'One Emotion'. It's also got the stunning 'Tommy Gun', with the most stupendously amazing drum beat you'll here in any song.
CD 3 is a tad crap but that's probably to do with my musical preferences. By 1980 the Clash were experimenting more with reggae and ska, which I don't particularly like. However, it does have the stunning 'Should I Stay or Should I Go' and the full 7-minute version of 'Straight to Hell'. There's also 2 unreleased tracks and a live version of 'Lightening Strikes Twice'
As well as the three CDs you get a lyrics booklet, and a biography booklet edited by Kosmo Vinyl with loads of quotes and behind the scenes information about all the tracks and albums the Clash did.
The CDs are worth the £25 alone, so this is a neat addition. Also, you really won't need to buy another Clash album again, because this has all the best bits of their career, but of course this is a double-edged sword. If you have all the albums, there's very little you're going to find here, except for the booklet, unreleaseds and live songs, which are hardly worth the asking price on their own. As a futher note, there's also a reason why some tracks weren't released previously....crap tracks tend not to sell very well.
Overall though, if you're a hardcore fan who has to have everything, or you've got one or two albums and you want more Clash, you could do a lot worse than buy this album....in fact, it's probably the best purchase you'll make.
Advantages: You get 3jam-packed CDs, a great lyric book and additional photo/personal recollections book. Disadvantages: There are none I can think of.
...of this nature!!
The Clash released alot of material in the approx 10 years they were together (without Topper Headon and Mick Jones, they could only go one way, as the "magic" had gone...) and these 3 CDs does an excellent job of representing their wide musical diversity, as they embraced various styles remarkably well!
You also get a "Clash Lyrics" booklet, which makes for very cool reading! As Mr Strummer often had an "individual" way of singing, ... ...Pennie Smith, personal accounts from Clash associates and friends like the infamous Lester Bangs (from his book "Psychotic reactions and Carburetor Dung"...odd title but bound to be a good read!) and Kosmo Vinyl, a close pal of the band.
...When you look back on the image of the Clash; an often talked about subject, you realise how different they actually LOOKED, so often! Really quite an achievement! The bottom line was and still is that the Clash ...

Advantages: 2 demo's, few live songs, and a couple of unreleased Disadvantages: It really isnt anything special if you own all the albums
This album was almost £50 when I first saw it so I thought it was going to be brilliant.I presumed it would be a live album because of the title. I finally got the CDs seperatly at second hand shops for about £15 and I was a little dissappointed. The first 2 songs were good, two early demo's of janie jones and Carreer Opportunities full of the rawness and energy of punk. The rest of the tracks on disc 1 come straight from the first album which is ... ...end CD1 there are some more live songs
I fought the law and english civil war. CD2 is just as unspectacular with a few songs from give em enought rope and one rare track called One Emotion. CD3 just covers sandinista onwards but does have a good cover with mick jones singing of Every Little Bit Hurts and a dodgy live version of every bit hurts.
No way is it worth £50 new for the unreleased tracks and live stuff.
nothing special in the thick booklet ...

Album Notes
CLASH ON BROADWAY is a 3-CD 63-song box set with many unreleased recordings and 2 booklets. The Clash: Joe Strummer, Mick Jones (vocals, guitar); Paul Simonon (vocals, bass); Keith Levene (guitar); Topper Headon, Terry Chimes (drums). Producers include: Sandy Pearlman, Micky Foote, Guy Stevens, Lee Perry, The Clash. Compilation producers: Don De Vito, Richard Bauer. Includes liner notes by Lester Bangs & Kosmo Vinyl. Digitally remastered by Bill Price. A love of reggae (Junior Murvin's "Police And Thieves", work with Mikey Dread) and classic 60's tunes (Bobby Fuller's "I Fought The Law") gave them a depth that most of the punk movement lacked, and pushed them in directions both obscure (the dub songs on the "Sandinista" set) and popular ("Rock The Casbah", a top 10 hit).
Album Reviews
Q (4/00, p.107) - 5 stars out of 5 - "...a 63-track telling of one of rock's more labyrinthine yarns....we travel from a 1977 demo of 'Janie Jones' to the unedited version of 'Straight To Hell'....about as good as record consumption gets." Melody Maker (2/29/00, pp.48-9) - 5 stars out of 5 - "...represents the finest body of work a British band has left since The Beatles....concentrating heavily on their finest 2 albums [THE CLASH and LONDON CALLING]....Perfect."
Entertainment Weekly - "...tear-down-the-walls punk....the Clash's most protean tracks make current alternative rock sound diluted and compromised." - Rating: A-
