...directed by Ken Russell (1975) DVD: £ 17.09 THE CHARITY ROCK CONCERT: As part of their American tour of 1989, The Who gave a charity performance at Los Angeles Universal Amphitheatre to celebrate “Tommy”’s twentieth anniversary. This was The Who in its ‘big band’ incarnation with a large brass section, vocal chorus, percussion and keyboards. They were joined on stage by guests: Phil Collins (Uncle Ernie), Billy Idol (Coiusin Kevin), Elton John (Pinball Wizard), Patti LaBelle (Acid Queen) and Steve Winwood (The Hawker). Not content with that, The Who returned to the stage after the performance for an encore of thirteen of their greatest hits, lasting for over an hour. ...Patty has progressed too much since her last album to let this slip by because it's not as familiar as the last album. If you give it a chance you will re-discover her and feel the same way you felt when you first discovered her. If you are just discovering Patty with the Flaming Red CD, then you may want to have a listen to Living with Ghosts. You'll see exactly what I mean. Country fans may also want to check out the new Martina McBride and Dixie Chicks CDs who do incredible folk-country covers of "Goodbye" and "Let Him Fly" respectively.... Read review

...7. Land [Medley]: Horses/Land of a Thousand Dances/La Mer (De) 8. Elegie 'Horses' is a landmark album of the 70's. Partly produced by John Cale (ex- Velvet Underground) it is a high-energy proto-punk record with an amazing vocal/lyrical performance by Patti Smith herself. In order to understand the concept behind the record it is important to know a little of Patti Smith own concepts in relation to music. She famously described the record as "Three chord rock merged with the power of the word". This illustrates the importance of words to Smith. She had always been an admirer of the beat writers such as Kerouac and Ginsberg and had experimented with writing free form or spontaneous poetry herself.
