Advantages: Possibly the best tenor saxophonist ever - without a doubt the best still alive! Disadvantages: None - if you want to see him live, you should try to soon - he's getting on a bit now - 73 yrs old now - still as good as ever though!
with many jazz greats, having already done so with Babs Gonzalez, J.J. Johnson, Bud Powell and MilesDavis before he turned twenty, and also benefitting from having Thelonius Monk as a mentor.
Later in his life, during the mid-sixties, Rollins stopped playing in public and tried to get into religion, and especially eastern religions, spending time in Japan and India, and also spending a lot of time in a monastry. In the 70's however, Sonny resurfaced again and returned to recording and playing again, making his next recording in 1972, and is still going strong.
Recently, I had the chance to see SonnyRollins playing in a rare appearance at the Barbican in London, and I must say that he was absolutely fantastic. Although he may now look slightly older, his playing is still as good as when he was younger and on those classic recordings ...

Darn that dream,
I dream each night.
You say you love me and hold me tight.
But when I awake and you are out of sight.
Oh, darn that dream.
Reasons For Purchasing
I was first introduced to this type of Jazz music by My Grandmother and Grandfather who loved listening to MilesDavis and of course their choice of music rubbed off on my own Mother, who I remember as a child, played the MilesDavis Quintet quite a lot also. I took this CD from my Grandmothers collection after she died three years ago and I am glad I did, as now I have got the chance to write about this CD.
This is quite an interesting album I have to say, it features twelve excellent jazz songs from MilesDavis. I listen to this CD when I am relaxed, feeling low or even in a party mood, as this is a great album for every occasion. This album seems to have ...
Advantages: Virtuoso trumpet at its best Disadvantages: Only the re-released version has the sound quality it deserves
The first time I heard this CD was with my Grandparents as a young child, I didn't understand and didn't appreciate the beauty of the music, I remember my granddad tapping his toes and sipping his whiskey, humming gently along with the trumpet solos, this fond memory was abruptly brought forward whilst browsing in a local alternative record shop. I spotted "A Kind Blue" and instantly withdrew my wallet and the CD was mine. As readers you will probably like to know about the music is like! Well simply it is divine, some find MilesDavis's music too intense and muddled, but it takes either an uninterested listener to ignore this or a fascinated listener to understand and appreciate it, I hope that the buyer will lean towards the latter of these two opposites. ...

THE CLASSIC PRESTIGE SESSIONS 1951-1956 collects all of the sides recorded by trumpeter Miles Davis and tenor saxophonist Sonny Rollins for Prestige during their time together as young players in New York City. Both musicians were just past their formative years during this period, having broken free from the heavy sway of their bop elders--especially alto saxophonist Charlie Parker, who appears here in several classic cuts originally released on COLLECTOR'S ITEMS. Both Davis and Rollins were expanding the bop mold and beginning to discover their own sound. Davis had already made his mark with the innovative BIRTH OF THE COOL and was further developing his romantic, cerebral minimalism. Similarly, Rollins was quickly becoming the heir to Parker's throne as the most searching and muscular saxophonist on the scene. The dichotomy of their sounds made Davis and Rollins a perfect rub as jazz partners and these recordings helped foreshadow and define such future jazz movements as hard bop, post-bop, and even free jazz. Included here are such stellar and classic tracks as "Dig," "Oleo," "Down," "The Serpent's Tooth," "Airegin," "Doxy," and "Vierd Blues"." Although all of these recordings are available elsewhere on the original albums, Davis and Rollins' relationship was an incredibly fertile one and it is great to have all of it compiled together.
