The Best Review in the World...Ever!!
Advantages: All the pieces are short Disadvantages: There are 4 of them
This is a truly awesome collection of the most popular classics. I have to say that it is probably factually correct and thus not questionable under the Trades Description Act. Here are 4, not 3, but 4 CDs packed full with a seemingly endless flow of tunes you will instantly recognise. Now, let's be honest, who will this appeal to? Well not me that's for sure, but here are the top ten reasons why buying this CD collection may be an option for you:
... ...2. You want a quick bluffers guide to classical music so you can impress your mother-in-law at the Proms
3. You are a music teacher and need a resource for the class
4. You are a Classic FM fan
5. You are writing a music quiz and have no other classical CDs
6. You have a short attention span
7. You are buying something posh for your working class granny
8. You can't stand long pieces of classical music
9. You need shiny objects to keep the ...

Tchaikovsky's Fourth
Advantages: Very exciting and powerful piece of emotional hysteria Disadvantages: If you're obsessed with classical form and beauty, then this might just be too much
"FATUM"
Pjotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was an unusual Russian composer of the 19th century. He was considered authentically Russian outside his own country, yet was scorned by the nationalist composers of Russia. The Mighty Five of nationalist composers (César Cui, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Modest Mussorgsky, Alexander Borodin and Mily Balakirev) were spearheading the idea of national Russian music as opposed to mainstream German Romanticism that was on ... ...to counteract Anton Rubinstein, a composer known for being very academic and often producing music profoundly dull. This caused them, particularly Balakirev, to seriously suspect the viability of solid academic training, rather opting for music with an "authentic" Russian stamp on it. To them, Tchaikovsky seemed too cosmopolitan to be taken seriously as forwarding their cause, and therefore his career suffered, most notably in the hands of Cui, the ...

A Classical Review
Advantages: A great diversity of famous works Disadvantages: Not everything is perfect
I am a huge fan of classical music, with a collection soon breaking the 700 marker. But where did it all begin? Well right here. When I got my first CD player, I played my parents CDs until making my first CD purchase. I stumbled along a 2-CD collection called "Simply the Best classical Anthems." Honestly, I had not the slightest clue about what music al the names on the back contained. But there were so many interesting pieces there so that I immediately ... ...buy. Unlike many other collections, this one features many top flight recordings of some of the most popular classical music. Some of them are still holding their own in the mass of my collection. It was also extremely useful for me in expanding my collection.

CD 1
VERDI: Dies Irae from Requiem
ORFF: O Fortuna from Carmina Burana

Tchaikovsky's Fifth Symphony: Refined passion
Advantages: Great passion, beautiful melodies, unrestrained romanticism Disadvantages: The finale doesn't quite convince in it's purpose
HAPPINESS, OR TRAGEDY?
After the doom-laden confessional that was the Fourth Symphony, Tchaikovsky was finally getting more in peace with himself. His fame began to spread and by 1885 he was already considered a national hero. This time saw the maturation of Tchaikovsky's style from the more blatantly folk-song oriented works and the more youthfully turbulent ideas to a more mainstream and calmer drift. Following the Fourth Symphony came the Violin ... ...(composed during his bright stay at Italy) and 1812 (with the famous cannon-fire finale), the subtle String Serenade, the elegiac Piano Trio, a couple of small operas, and the large scale Manfred Symphony, amid some smaller scale works, all predominately genial in character. In 1888, after getting over his fear of conducting, he began a tour of Europe and the US with the purpose of promoting his works. To this purpose came about the need for a new ...
