HISTORY OF TENORS ON ONE CD
Advantages: All the hero's in one Disadvantages: Mixed sound recordings Sound louder and quieter in places
...first glance you would imagine the CD to be the normal mainstream nonsense with Russell Watson singing Amor ti Vieta, but when looking at the back you do see that this is a quality CD. So lights down low CD player on high and a nice Glass of wine and you are ready for an audio trip through operatic tenor modern history. Track List: (THERE ARE 27 TRACKS IF YOU WANT A SUMMARY OF EACH ONE THEN READ ON OTHERWISE HEAD FOR BOTTOM OF REVIEW)
Track 1: O ... ...the Cd. Nothing but quality technique and voice on show here, one of the best renditions you'll ever hear
Track 2: Morgenlich leuchtend sung by Peter Anders
Not my favourite song and a big jump in quality from the first track but still an adept singer, the first sign that there is going to be a wide variation of voice and style on this record
Track 3: Bimba, dagli occh sung by Hedwig von Debicka and Helge Rosvaenge
The first Duet we hear on the ...

Never gets old.requires focus/attentativeness
Advantages: Oistrakh is perfect in technique, style, and interpretation for 20th century works Disadvantages: as an older recording, soloist brought out well above orchestra. its oistrakh!
The Shostakovich violin concertos are already amazing, and oistrakh playing them is perfect. his understanding, style, and technique are perfect for lots of 20th century works such as ysaye, shostakovich, and prokofiev. he uses his mastery of bow control to help bring out the shape and the journey of shostakovich and ysaye's works. i find his interpretations of shostakovich and ysaye the easiest to understand and enjoy in general. it's oistrakh...i ... ...for 2 violins is absolutely incredible. i discovered it recently... it's dramatic and has tuneful romantic moments at times (he was very influenced by romantic music), yet is very heartfelt and sentimental throughout, hence its name which means 'friendship'. it sticks to ysaye's cool modern style of music in its clever use of whole tone scales, quartal chords, clusters, and his achievement of moods and effects.
The amitie develops throughout with ...

Sumptuous works by a little-known composer
Advantages: Good recordings of unfamiliar, but rewarding works Disadvantages: None
Karlowicz is a relatively unknown composer whose chief claim to fame was his untimely death in a skiing accident just before the First World War. He left a small collection of works, the later of which (figured in this disc) show a talent that was tragically snuffed out before he could achieve greatness.
The Symphonic Poems featured here reveal a composer adept at interesting orchestral effects (try the sad theme at the start of the Lithuanian Rhapsody, ... ...writing for the lower-toned instruments of the orchestra. Karlowicz has clearly learnt a lot from Richard Strauss, whose shadow fell across much pre-1914 music, but it often lacks the extrovert quality of the Gernman composer's tone poems; as the inlay notes say, there is a 'brooding' quality to much of this music, particularly evident in the middle sections of these works. Another feature of Karlowicz's writing is his tendency to pick himself up ...

Music for Meditation
Advantages: A good introduction to sacred music Disadvantages: A rather niche album on which those into the genre will find nothing new
...the same. Requiem is subtitled "music for Reflection and Meditation". It takes various well known settings of the requiem mass, together with a couple of other fitting pieces and puts them together in one place. If one is so minded, one should note that this album is NOT a requiem mass. The pieces don't follow in the right order but, having said that, to the knowledgeable, the whole album stands on its own as a good religious set. One of the other ... ...who are less well-known. When one says "requiem" one might think of Verdi or Mozart but here we also have offerings from Spanish composer Lobo (a motet) and the Italian Pergolesi (an extract from his Sabat Mater). I feel that Naxos have really got it right with this compilation. The perfect balance between the known and the unknown is struck with excerpts from the more well known Requiems by Mozart and Verdi featuring more than once meaning ...
