Advantages: Very influential, Some classic tracks Disadvantages: Painfull listening, in danger of disappearing up its own arse.
Let's be clear about this right from the start, making an album that is distorted to buggery is not essentially a sign of genius. I wouldn't say that there are no good tracks on this album, digeridoo is a timeless techno classic as is analogue bubblebath 1 but i challenge anyone to listen to this album from start to finish without teetering on the edge of insanity. Whether that is a good or bad thing i am not to sure. Piling on the white noise and ... ...called) tune painfull to listen to when the experimental aspects are really serving no purpose at all. Taken on an individual basis tracks such as 'Tamphex' and 'We have arrived' are impressive works but surely the point is that you should want to listen to a whole album of music instead of just selecting tracks to impress your mates with their weirdness.

Piling on the white noise and crunching up every sound on purpose just makes a (so called) tune painfull to listen to when the experimental aspects are really serving no purpose at all. Taken on an individual basis tracks such as 'Tamphex' and 'We have arrived' are impressive works but surely the point is that you should want to listen to a whole album of music instead of just selecting tracks to impress your mates with their weirdness.
I cannot argue that this album has been massively influential but that is not always a sign that it's going to contain good music. All the tracks are listenable but the album itself should only be taken in small doses.
Advantages: Probably the least weird Aphex Twin Album Disadvantages: Does get a little boring
Classics. The title is maybe a little up it's own arse, as this is not an album of classics, however much the music may have influenced today's electronic artists. However on reviewing this album I do feel the need to take into account that at the time the majority of tracks here were made, Richard D James (Aphex Twin) was not very old for an electronic artist.
This is by far the most accessable album of his, yet may not sound so unless you've heard ... ...white noise and distorted drums and computer noise. This album however tends to stick to a beat. The tracks are hard acid techno rather than the experimental electronica of late. Therefore this album may appeal to people who would not necessarily consider themselves fans of this particular genre or in fact Aphex twin.
The album contains 13 tracks (2 of which are variations of the same) and takes a journey from hard distorted beats and synths to.....hard ...

Advantages: Extremely good quality elecrronica Disadvantages: May not appeal to all
Autechre, consist of just 2 artists, whom also work under the alternative alias Gescom on the skam record label, this release under the highly successful Warp label is in my opinion the best of Autechre's long playing releases.
I own the whole undeleted Autechre discography and out of them all i find this release the most varied and satisfying, when compared to incunabula which is more synth based and less aggressive, this album may be more appealing to a broader base of music fans. This is by no means mainstream music but shows Autechre's full range of talent. The sleeve design created by by the highly successful Chris Cunningham, responsible for the aphextwin come to daddy video, along with Bjork's 'all is full of love' music video.
This in an electronic classic, and though some tracks are quite noisy and glitchy, this isnt too ...
Advantages: Classic. Cult. A few good tracks. Disadvantages: Weak compared to other Aphex Twin releases. Bland techno.
Polygon Window era was a product of old school I.D.M-esque design; or more specifically, primitive techno.
Surfing on Sine Waves does however contain some very nice material, as well as being a huge classic. It can be seen as a minor (but important) bridge between Selected Ambient Works 85-92 and Selected Ambient Works vol. 2.
The drab short-budget Yamaha feel to the opening track, Polygon Window, has a mysterious charm to it. That being said, it does not go anywhere it isn't supposed to, strictly tied to a 4/4 loop of tedious design. Still, Polygon Window manages to capture Richard's sound at it's most basic; an interesting atmospheric track, purely ambient in nature.
It is while casting backdrop drones that AphexTwin sheds light on his own peculiar index of sounds, pointing in the direction of his previous 1992 album; the only ...
Aphex Twin: Richard D. James. Richard D. James is that rarest of artists, untouched and unaffected by trends or popular currents yet inspiring millions of imitators with every move. The reputedly self-taught James is always moving forward, not one to rest on laurels or dwell on past triumphs, expressing his genius with an almost infuriating offhandedness. Since an adolescence spent assembling and disassembling electronic gadgets, the "bad boy" of electronic music has already advanced his genre beyond many other popular forms. Even the tastes of the 30th Century may fall short of catching up with him. CLASSICS represents the flip side of the SELECTED AMBIENT WORKS albums, collecting several of James' early singles for Belgium's R&S Records. This is some of the Aphex Twin's more grueling, monochromatic material ("Phloam," "Tamphex (Hedphuq Mix)," "Metapharstic"). But James' rarefied cerebral melodies soar above the rhythmic grind, particularly on "Polynomial-C" and "Dodeccaheedron." Also included are "Analogue Bubblebath I" and "Digeridoo," still brilliant tracks that brought James instant--and, one would imagine, unwelcome--fame. The latter approximates aboriginal drone with homemade devices, while the former's pristine Detroit-styled melodic percolations, crafted with (original Aphex "Twin") Tom Middleton, are the Aphex Twin's extraordinary beginnings.
