Advantages: Excellent Mix to Create an Inspired Album! Disadvantages: None!
An absolute gem of an album which is exactly what it says on the tin. As always some of the best tracks bands make are B-sides and this album contains such tracks, some of which are absolute gems. Unlike most bands, who after hitting the big scene for a couple of years are desperate to capitalise on their new success before it all goes wrong, Super Furry Animals have shunned the 'norm' of creating an album of all their hits so far (with a couple of rarities or live tracks thrown in for good measure), but have actually thoughtfully compiled an album', which stands in its own entirety. Its all here (in Welsh and English), with 'ballads' 'rip-roaring tracks' and the usual Super Furry's obscurities, mixing all styles of contemporary music, changing the pitch and style within a song to create a medley, and doing everything that only they ...
Advantages: excellent cross-career introduction to the man himself Disadvantages: A few off tracks, but mostly no disadvantages at all!
According to some website or other, January 31st 2004 is LloydCole's 43rd birthday, and as such I felt it necessary to write an opinion about the wonder that he is. Possessed of a sexy drawl, a way with comedy-serious lyrics and gentleness on the guitar he simply rocks. Empire magazine once described Crowded House as "New Zealand purveyors of Dad Rock", apart from the geographical location the same could be said of the blessed Lloyd, and I make no apology for considering that his best feature.
This collection (track list at the end for fans who like to know these things!) splits into two parts. The first spans Lloyd's career from the early days when headed up LloydCole and the Commotions and runs through tracks from albums such as Rattlesnakes (buy it!) and Mainstream. The second encompasses the rather varied work he has produced ...
Advantages: Great for die hard collectors Disadvantages: Unlikely to be played very often
, in saying that the EMO generation could well be taken with the dark nature of this album.
Some of the tracks did help define the band and transformed the band onto the centre stage. Of particular note is 'Dogs and Everywhere' and 'Little Girl (With Blue Eyes)' which demonstrated the ability of the band to grap the attention and to add a complex arrangement of sounds.
To be entirely honest, this album is the weakest that Pulp have produced and I would suggest that most of the tracks would be considered 'b' side records. If you are about to discover Pulp then leave this well alone and go for the accomplished 'Freaks' album. This album will appeal to true Pulp enthusiasts who want to complete a collection. However, it even then is likely to collect dust on the CD rack. Even during a deep depression, 'Masters of the Universe' is ...
