Album Notes: Personnel includes: Guy Clark (vocals, acoustic guitar); Verlon Thompson (acoustic, nylon-string & National resonator guitars, banjo, nylon-string banjo, harmonica, background vocals); Darrell Scott (acoustic & nylon-string acoustic guitars, dobro, mandolin, mandocello, autoharp, accordion, bass, background vocals); Shawn Camp (acoustic guitar, fiddle, background vocals); Emmylou Harris (background vocals). Producers: Guy Clark, Verlon Thompson, Darrell Scott, Chris Latham. Recorded at EMI Studio, Nashville, Tennessee. When the roster of great Texas songwriters is called, the two names that usually tumble out first are Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark. These two compatriots shared a gift for combining the simple and the poetic in an unassuming but endlessly memorable country/folk style. With Van Zandt's passing, Clark was left to shoulder the burden of Lone Star poet laureate alone (he's based out of Nashville these days, but you can't take Texas out of the boy). COLD DOG SOUP registers the presence of Van Zandt nevertheless; the opening song mentions him by name, and is followed by Steve Earle's Townes memorial "Ft. Worth Blues." Nevertheless, Clark has always been fully his own man, and his unique vision is fully intact throughout the album. The songs are presented in a pared-down acoustic format, with Clark mostly accompanied only by Darrell Scott (mandolin) and Verlon Thompson (guitar). This allows the uncluttered, deceptively simple imagery of Clark's songs room to breathe. His weathered, gritty voice sounds full of wisdom as it delivers sharply observed truisms about the ups and downs of life, all the while maintaining a bemused but ultimately optimistic attitude.
Album Reviews: Dirty Linen (2-3/00, p.53) - "...Clark's knack of carving out a lean and seamless verse...always draws the listener into the heart of songs as vivid as three-minute movies and guarantee a CD's worth of 'songs you can smell'..." CMJ (11/1/99, p.28) - "...Clark's earthy songs and dusty vocals have only ripened with age....the perfect setting for his honest approach to songwriting."
...INTRODUCTION
After freezing my proverbials off on a walk back home from work, my slightly more than occasional trip to M&S found me looking for something warm, substantial, filling and, most important of all, easy to prepare. Winter makes me even lazier than usual it has to be said. Soup was the answer I stumbled on. And so here we are with M&S Chicken, Mushroom & Rice soup.
PACKAGING AND RECYCLING
The soup comes in a slightly conical transparent plastic pot, which tapers in ever so slightly on its way down. This is topped off with a transparent plastic lid, and a plastic film sealing the pot below the lid. According to the package information, the lids are recyclable but the main container is not. I'm not impressed by that! That's a huge amount of packaging heading towards landfill.
PRICE
The soup is...

...I've always liked hotdogs; I remember eating them quite often all cut up into cute little pieces whenever I'd go for tea at my friend's house. Though there was a time when, for whatever reason, I had not had any for a while. When I stumbled across the incredibly cheap tin of 8 hot dogs from Asda's Smart Price range, at a mere 32p, I couldn't help myself and into the trolley they went!
A craving bubbling up inside me, I decided to have my hotdogs for lunch. I'd not bought hot dog buns (*slaps self on forehead*), so I had to settle for a brown-bread sandwich. As long as I was getting my hotdogs though, I wasn't too fussed! I wedged the tin opener into the top and began to twist. I was quite surprised at how easily the lid opened; I've normally got to fight to prise open Asda's tins!
As soon as I drained the tin and pulled back...
