does a pretty good job of rounding up most of this seminal band's best known songs. And that's despite the fact that it draws fairly heavily on the late 80s period when they were enjoying a fruitful collaboration with the Pogues. With their Rip Van Winkle comedy beards and hard-drinking lifestyle, the Dubliners brought a punky sensibility to Irish folk music previously unheard off when they arrived on the scene in the early 60s. It's hardly surprising they were so influential. What some may not be aware of is their fine instrumental prowess, best showcased here on "The Marino Waltz" and "The Mason's Apron". The voice of Ronnie Drew dominates on the other tunes and that's appropriate. Even though he's by no means their only singer, he is their most distinctive. If you don't have any CDs by the Dubliners and think you might only need one, this compilation is a good place to start. --Jon Lusk

When I'm a bit the worse for wear I want many things ( best not to go into them now but I'm sure you could guess most of them) but there is one thing I know will satisfy. The Dubliners collection is the perfect CD for this occassion. ...The Dubliners are not your run of the mill Irish band. Oh no, to be sure there not! They had a top ten hit in the UK in 1967 with Seven Drunken Nights and they have had hits with Black Velvet Band and Never Wed an Old Man.
They take there name from the James Joyce novel ( if you have read this hats off to you; I am an English graduate and I still have yet to tackle it). They play Irish folk music and are a five piece band.

*** The Band ***
The Dubliners are not your run of the mill Irish band.
*** The Albumn ***
I have laughed at some of the music reviews I have read on Ciao so far because bands were complimented on "playing their own instruments". BIG DEAL! The question should not be if they play their own instruments but how they play them. The Dubliners are masters. Each member brings something different to the group and they are true musicians.
The albumn has a wonderful mixture of songs and like all good albumns takes you on a journey. The songs are layered to reflect on one another.
The Dubliners are famed for their sense of humour and there are numerous examples here from the comical child rearing advice of Jar of Porter to the bawdy humour of Monto.
Within this albumn are also wonderful musical pieces based around reels. These atmospheric pieces are beautiful to listen to and allow us to bring our own interpretations to it.
However, the real pearls are the rebel songs; songs that recall the Irish attempts to oppose English rule. Some may misleading read these as simple celebrations of the IRA but to do so would be to ridiculously simplify the songs. They are personal narratives like Patriot Games which tells us of a rebels frustration with broken promises or Off to Dublin in the Green which tells the story of a simple ploughboy frustrated by his lot who joins the IRA.
Indeed the Dubliners song capture the history of Ireland. It documents in its own way the migration of the population, the hard toil of its men as it built roads and buildings. As well as pondering every day matters like love in the moving Banks of the Roses.

*** Conclusion ***
This is an incredible albumn and I do not use that word lightly. Lasting over an hour it will make you laugh, move you , woo you with the incredible music and make you think and consider the causes of struggles.
I mentioned I listen to this when I'm drunk but you do not need to be legless to listen to this at all, it's just I'm a bit strange and love the see-saw emotions of the albumn all the more like this. That sounds good doesn't it?
This can be purchased from £ 3.50 on Amazon and that is a steal. Get it, enjoy it and pour a drink for me too!

Q (8/99, p.136) - 3 stars (out of 5) - "...taking care of business more than adequately between 1969 and 1983, the lushly bearded folkies deliver love, loss, exile, mischief and politics with voices like gravel on a washboard..."
