Advantages: These two discs capture some of Grace Jones most enthralling recording work Disadvantages: Strangely omits the classic "Slave To The Rhythm" - one of Grace's biggest sellers
. Grace once again conveys a vulnreable side on the rousing, soft-rock/pop ballad "Someone To Love", which intertwines English and French lyrics and was another track lifted from 1989's "Bulletproof Heart". CD2 then closes with Grace's cracking 1992 club hit "Sex Drive" which is a belter and comes complete with some mildly risque lyrics.
"The GraceJones Story" is undoubtedly the most lengthy, comprehensive compilations of her work. Anyone wanting a thorough over view of her music career, then this 2 disc collection is the best on offer (despite omitting other notable cuts such as Grace's Top 20 smash hit "Slave To The Rhythm"). It's just a shame Grace hasn't always been rewarded with the commercial acceptance she so richly deserves. Even so, "The GraceJones Story" is a testament of her extraordinary, remarkably diverse musical talents ...
Advantages: superb collection of superb songs - great production too Disadvantages: can't think of any
out the seriously weird video too (you can probably find this on youtube).
For everyone who remembers the heavy dub sound of the early eighties albums there's loads to catch you on this album too.
And, gratifyingly, the album feels like an album, not just a random collection of songs. Most tracks join together which reinforces the impression of a proper album. The vocals are superb throughout, some really amazing singing from Grace.
I'm so glad that GraceJones is back. She's 60, she may be as batty as a box of frogs, but on the basis of this record she rules!
Well worth getting. ...
Advantages: Hurricane emerges as Grace Jones most compelling recording project Disadvantages: None that springs to mind
WOW! This stunning. literally perfect new studio album by the inimitable, off-the-wall GraceJones (her first project since 1989's Bulletproof Heart) far surpassed what i'd originally expected. Now, don't get me wrong, i've always loved the weird but wonderful GraceJones, but had long since given up hope of her returning to the music scene, let alone with such concise precision, depth and fire. Her last project Bulletproof Heart was a rather hit-and-miss affair, alternated by some stunning results (Love On Top Of Love<, Bulletproof Heart and On My Way) and some rather forgettable, nondescript recordings. Bulletproof Heart failed to re-capture the glories of GraceJones recognised masterpieces - Warm Leatherette (1980), Nightclubbing (1981) and Slave To The Rhythm (1985). On the excellent albums Warm Leathrette, Nightclubbing and Living ...
