Denver. Spanning four discs, the collection not only draws upon the obvious highlights of Denver's career, but also includes fan favourites that might not have received the same airplay as their more popular counterparts. Listening to Country Roads, the finesse with which Denver balanced his folk rock tendencies with his country leanings emerges as testament to his talent. As a box set, the collection would be remiss if it didn't include "Leaving on a Jet Plane", "Annie's Song", "Thank God I'm a Country Boy", or "Rocky Mountain High"--and, of course, the box set's namesake is here. Later hits like "Calypso", with its sea-shanty yodelling, portray Denver's ability to ease himself into the role of balladeer, regardless of the genre. Novelty duets with Placido Domingo and Emmylou Harris were intended to rekindle what seemed to be lagging popularity, but Country Roads establishes John Denver's contributions as timeless, nonetheless. --Steve Gdula

No body can deny that John Denver is an exceptionally passionate man and in fact has no inhibition as far as expressing his thoughts and concern about everything encompassing human values when it comes to composing and singing songs. This particular album containing fifteen tracks are all dedicated to nature. Expressing his deep concern over the ever-increasing threat to it.
According to his own confession it took him to be 40 years old to be really mature and see things in its true perspective, but to my mind he is being too generous. If you flip through the contents of the album, from Annie’s song to Raven’s child in all of them in some way or other he talks about nature, its beauty, the threats that It is being open to the ever increasing pollution. I have tried to delve into the source of inspiration of producing the album but couldn’t get enough data but what ever be the inspiration, the selections (when there are so many options open) of the tracks are excellent when you have nature in your mind.
Annie’s song is probably one of the best compositions of John Denver, it was inspired by his first wife and probably best shows his attitude towards life. I would put this song at the top of the list.
One of the exceptional songs in this album is “Raven’s Child”. He is a song writer of true class. Denver sometimes sounds like an environmentalist who is trying to fight the arrogance of power and greed, sometimes very philosophical, sometimes a philanthropist and most of the time an eternal optimist.
He is hurt by the fact that even the child’s heart is being corrupted…. “like the flower that shattered the stone..”
The guitar and the piano through out the album is exceptional. He generally does not require to be backed up by gaudy music, a strum on the guitar here and a bang there on the piano is enough to tell his story.
Most of the tracks in this album are memorable but some are very special like “Sunshine” “Sunshine on my shoulder makes me happy Sunshine on my eyes make me cry…” simple statements which are very close the heart (I’ll rate this track as number 2)
Another lovely number, as I have mentioned, is “The flowers that shattered the stone” “The Earth is our mother Just turning around with the trees in the forest and blue thunder around…” nothing that sounds out of this world, simple words to which one can relate to easily.
Denver is man who finds a hint of life even in Rocky Mountains and doesn’t mind celebrating the morning in “Earth day, every day” “Celebrate the morning …Dreams that are born in the dawns of early life……. Celebrate the living……. Celebrate the evening…..” You must note the change of mood in the song which is very refreshing.
I loved the lyrics of the “Wind song”, to my mind, the third best number appearing here “Wind is the whisper of motherly Earth ….Wind is the singer who sang the first song …Wind brings the fragrance of freshly mown hays…”
“Country road take me home” is a Denver special. The musical arrangement of this tune is very impressive so is its lyrics “… All my memories gather round her, miner’s lady stranger To the blue waters. Dark and dusty painted on the sky Misty taste of moonshine, tear drops in me eyes…” poetry at its best.
He has not forgotten to dig dip into the oceans in “Calypso”….. “to work in the surface of life and the living In search of the answer to the questions…..”
The numbers will impress every body not to talk about genuine lovers of music. A great album which touches the heart.

What can one say about this collection? JohnDenver is master at combining colorful lyrics, melody, and realism. His songs touch, one's feelings, taking the person to different places by song. This is a wonderful collection of works, that everyone can appreciate. One would do oneself a big diservice, by not checking this album out. Earth Songs
The reasons I am writing this review
There are just some artists that you seem to connect with. JohnDenver was one of these artists for me. His songs embodied many of my beliefs and hopes both personal and global. I was lucky to have watched him perform live in Liverpool before his tragic death in 1997. An experience I will always remember.
Earth songs conveys a number of important ecological messages that we should all be aware of and remember in our daily lives.
