Over recent years some of the biggest names in hip hop and R n B have emerged, such as Alicia Keys, Talib Kweli and John Legend to name but a few. All of which have one thing in common; they have all worked with producer turned rapper Kanye West. For most people, this name went largley unnoticed in the manistream community, however, just over a year ago West's debut album The College Dropout was released.
West had tried to release some of his own material for some time, and came very close a couple of years ago until he was involved in a car accident., which meant missing out on his opportunity. However, despite the enormous setback West bounced back working with artisits such as Jay Z and Cam'ron, before finally securing a deal with Rocafella to relase his own album.
The result proved to be well worth the wait, with instant hip hop classics such as 'Through The WIre', 'Jesus Walks' and 'Family Business'. West's skills as a Prodcuer as well as Rapper are clear to see in his work, with his own original use of a more mellow hip hop, unlike so many of the "gangsta" artisits of today. This leaves an easy-listening-like aspect to many of the tracks, as his music tends to ask you to listen as opposed to merely ramming it down your throat. This epitomises the work of West, who has been presented with numerous awards, including multiple Grammy's as well as unprecedented success at the MOBO's. This level of glory both back home in the US and over here in England has given West a cult following of devoted fans.
The album itself is simply full of quality hip hop tracks, any of which well worthy of release. I first encountered the album last February whilst in New York, and to this day am still listening today; only weeks away from the release of his follow up album. My advice to you is to simply find a copy of The College Dropout, beg, borrow, steal, download-whatever. You won't be disappointed.
