Kanye West's debut solo album, released under Roc-a-Fella Records, provides us with a selection of individual, unique songs unlike no other hip hop artist. With the use of humour, excellent beats, computer enhanced vocals adding an extra special touch to his songs, Kanye West's album portrays everything needed in the struggling world of hip hop. There are no violent songs talking about abusing women, drugs (apart from references to cannabis), killings, fights or surviving in the "ghetto". The songs are harmless and light hearted works of excellence...parents cannot look down on his material unlike other artist's work such as Fat Joe, Eminem's earlier material and Ja Rule.
Kanye West is an admirable star and a true performer and entertainer. He manages to capture the listener with every song on this outstanding album. He respects people and life and this is clearly depicted in the album.
Kanye West is a very clever artist and clearly has worked out the calculation for making a perfect hip hop song. With hits such as "Jesus Walks" - a song about God and Jesus, Kanye West is able to talk about issues and other subjects that wouldn't usually be found on hip hop records.
***Track List*** 1. Intro - A little annoying - but leads into a great song.
2. We Don't Care - A great beat, great lyrics and great music. Overall, a great song.
3. Graduation Day - Funny use of the American National Anthem.
4. All Falls Down - featuring Syleena Johnson - EXCELLENT! Kanye West has released this as a single and it did really well. A great song, great tune, great music and beat.
5. I'll Fly Away - A gospel style song, works well after you listen to it a few times.
6. Spaceship - Featuring GLC & Consequence - Amazing song. Possibly the best on this album, it caught my attention the minute it began to play. Excellent.
7. Jesus Walks - Great song!
8. Never Let Me Down - featuring Jay-Z & J. Ivy - Excellent - includes the brilliant Jay-Z adding something even more special to the song.
9. Get Em High - featuring Talib Kweli & Common - Great hip hop song. I need to find more words than just great!
10. Workout Plan - Humorous lead in to the "New Workout Plan"
11. The New Workout Plan- Outstanding son, funny, great music, excellent!!
12. Slow Jamz - Featuring Twista, Kanye West & Jamie Foxx - Brilliant song, this was one of Kanye Wests first songs and was a chart hit.
13. Breathe In Breathe Out - Featuring Ludacris - One of the weaker songs on the album, but still really good. Very hip hop.
14. School Spirit (Skit 1) - A stupid, but funny skit.
15. School Spirit - Brilliant - released this song recently, makes use of the computer enhanced "squeaky voice" that has become a hit in songs recently.
16. School Spirit (Skit 2) - Stupid but funny again - gets annoying after a while.
17. Lil Jimmy Skit - A bit stupid again...
18. Two Words - featuring Mos Def, Freeway and The Harlem Boys Choir - Good music, good beat, good singing, good lyrics, good rapping. Top song.
19. Through The Wire - One of the first singles by Kanye West, really successful.
20. Family Business - Nice song with good messages to the listener.
21. Last Call - Good ending song with some messages from Kanye's friends/colleagues.
With an album containing 21 songs, there is enough material to fall in love with. The skits can get quite annoying and are quite stupid, but also add a touch of humour to the album. For £9.99 off Amazon, purchasing this album will be something you never regret. In my opinion, i love the whole album, i can listen to it all the time and never get bored. He is a true artist, a true genious a true star and entertainer. It must be noted that the album does include some explicit lyrics, but the quality of the songs definitely make up for this.
A really superb start to the review... the only thing that I am missing a little is a description of what the songs sound like individually. I can't audiolise/envision it at all. x
Good review again - Nice to know that artists out there are being appreciated!! Little more information on types of tracks such as the involvement of instruments, the input on specific tracks from certain artists and the timing of the songs might get you some higher ratings. xx
ed Pharrell, delivers the unthinkable: West magically sledgehammers home his opinions on taboo topics over beats that are equally daring. The envelope-ripping beats shouldn'...
