Advantages: Five good tracks. Disadvantages: Ten mediocre or weak tracks.
Mind, Body & Soul is JossStone's 2nd album. From reading a little about this album she apparently saw it more as 'hers' than the first album 'Soul sessions'. This is evident in the lyrics of the first song 'Right to be wrong' where she sings "I've got a right to be wrong, my mistakes will make me strong", and goes on to change that second line in one verse with "Gotta sing my own song".
This is altogether a rather more mature offering than her first album, not that this means it is better. I certainly loved the use of vocals on the first album and the retro soul style.
Anyway the notoriously difficult second album, does she cut it?
Track 1. Right to be wrong.
Lyrically great if you are 30 and been beholden to a record company for years, or a partner, but c'mon, she was one year on from a platinum selling CD, and moaning about ...
Advantages: Pop music with a soul edge, which makes a nice change Disadvantages: Too many ballads
It's an oft repeated story. An attractive blonde teenager with a great voice is discovered singing on a talent show. She is handed a record deal and releases an album full of songs she hasn't had a hand in writing. We've heard this one so many times before. Yawn, yawn, and yawn.
But as she herself sings on "Super Duper Love", "wait a minute, wait a minute". This is not the story of some bubblegum pop act, discovered by Simon Cowell or Stock, Aitken and Waterman, performing the same tired style of music for the same audiences and destined to vanish before they've reached their twenties. The only comparison that can be drawn between JossStone and the likes of Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Billie Piper is that they all have blonde hair.
You may, at first glance, think that JossStone is going to be like one of those acts ...
Advantages: Best British soul offering for some time. Disadvantages: Not everones taste.
The Soul Sessions was JossStone's debut album. Released in 2003 when Joss was only just 17 years old. Incredible in itself for such a mature debut at such an early age, what seems even more stunning to me was that this soul inspired album is by a British artiste.
I am having so much fun converting my CD's to itunes, listening to albums that have been neglected.
The artwork both on the cover of the CD case and on the CD itself is pretty retro, in smokey purple, in truth, quite boring.
I could write about the triple platinum sales, or the awards and accolades, but I prefer to write about the songs themselves. Just one quote here, from the respected publication 'Mojo': "The soul sessions is a revelation".
