Italians certainly do it best, Lacuna Coil, came from the underground metal scene in Italy. Harmony, heavy melodic guitar riffs, a deep bass sound, and punchy drums. They use 7 string guitars, and Maus uses a 5 string bass - that helps add to the deeper sound that they get, I believe they use standard tuning, but their riffs are so complex, if you go back to previous albums, and listen to Cold, you will see the guitar solo's that are finally crafted, perfect harmony and passion in their music. Formerly known as Sleep of Right and previously Ethereal. The band has been inspired by gothic imagery/theme.
Cristina (lead singer) is such a role model, because of being a female - she shows alot of a true beauty, honesty and has obviously sacrificed being with her family to travel the world and show the fans their music that comes straight from their hearts. Their true and show so much passion for their music, performing all across the globes, at festivals or intimate gigs. Now onto their music, this is probably one of the most heard albums, by all fans or people into the metal music genre. Because of "heavens a lie" and "swamped" which are shown as video's on the music channels, which have extremely visual scenes, and strong heavy riffs. This is an album which you can just listen all the way through without stopping, and if you want a softer mood, put on disc two which has all acoustic tracks which have been finely crafted, with so much care. You can't miss the comalies cd, its just a huge sunflower/yellow flower on the cover, which draws you in, its bright and grabs attention, on the inside is some other artwork detail and the listing on the back of the tracks as per usual. Released in 2002:
1. Swamped - which is a fanastic energetic song to enter with, heavy riffs, overlayed guitar parts, lots of thought must have gone into this song, to make it such a strong song. "when you're taught through feelings" is such lyrics that stand out.... this song explores lots of different pitches, and melodies.
2. Heaven's A Lie - if you don't know this song shoot yourself, this song is the one everyone knows live, and is also played in acoustic format on disc two, the video for it is amazing, with the white dress that Cristina wears, the way Cristina's and Andrea's voices entwine in this song is fantastic, the opening guitar riff, and the version with the piano, showly shows some instrumental sections that catch your ear.
3. Daylight Dancer - instrumental kind of song here, focusses more on lots of melodies. This has a kind of electronic ticking in the back, and violins nearer the chorus. Cristina kicks in, at the chorus, with Andrea backing over her lyrics. This is an explosive song, especially for the drums, lots of volume. Very heavy beat, and a kind of clock ticking feeling that gives the pace of a "dance".
4. Humane - this song is more guitar focussed at the start, slower but very meaningful lyrics. Again their voices really pure and clear... and a jump between the lyrics of Cristina and Andrea.
5. Self Deception - very clever device used at the start, which is basically the chorus in reversed lyrics, which gives it a mysterious feeling. Probably one of my most favourite tracks on the album, as it is really deep in sound, and raw lyrics in the verses. There is a little catchy riff done by the guitars, between each section of the song.
6. Aeon - a sweet little guitar interlude, very soft and calming. Repetitive, but its just only instrumental, a nice little section which carries on the album at a fair pace, and shows their ability on their instruments.
7. Tight Rope - this song has a great middle section, especially where Criz (drummer) does his solo, a song with a great pace. With "self destruct sequence" whispers in the backgruond at the start, a kind of movie track feel to it. Fantastic harmony between Cristina and Andrea again all in the Verses, high pitch and low pitch combined, spot on, gives the song a vocally harmonious feeling.
8. The Ghost Woman And The Hunter - probably another one of the really laid back songs on the album. reversed guitar melody at the start, then the vocals are really soft not agressive, and it has alot of instrumental, violin backing.
9. Unspoken - kicking back into action, a faster and progressive song. Straight in, but is just so catch, especially because of the bass riff, and everything fits together perfectly, especially Cristina's voice comes across perfectly with the rest of the instruments. Little guitar parts between each section make it fit together perfectly. Definately my favourite on the song, not a flaw in this song, its just perfect, the lyrics and instruments come together in unison perfectly.
10. Entwined - most meaningful lyrics in this song. Slow echoey lyrics at the start, and then the distorted guitars come in. It starts off really slow, and Cristina's voice is amazingly clear and pure. "entwined together now, entwined forever". The lyrics are just the ones that get stuck in your head. This song about true love. So much emotion in this song, mostly about love - definately gets the message across when you listen to the lyrics.
11. The Prophet Said - fast tempo, another explosive song on the album. With the guitars and bass playing in unison, very choppy. Give it a listen. Not my favourite but still very upbeat and heavy sounding.
12. Angel's Punishment - the repetitive guitar riff at the start, and electronic sounds, give it a mysterious feeling. Reversed guitars used again, which is a great technique. Cristina's vocals are deeper in this song, until it reaches the chorus. This is a strange song, "war, destruction" and their vocal lines combine together lovely.
13. Comalies - soft guitar ballad sort of thing, with a fairly moderate pace. A nice guitar solo that repeats at the start. Half in Italian, half in English, gives it a nice feel. Don't know why that did that, but words like "resistero, are pretty obvious it means resist" and makes you wonder.. I'd say this is another one of the instrumental songs, lots of harmonious violin backing, and then the guitars all make it fit together.
Their second disc within the Deluxe set has wallpapers on it, the visual leaflets of the disc, is very colourful and bold. The second disc is mainly their acoustic versions of songs, again done with alot of meaning... and shows their different approaches to music ---> especially acoustic, not electric.
Lacuna Coil's music never fails to amaze anyone. It's true from the heart, whether it be passionate, or agressive. In Italian or English, their songs are cleverly crafted, with certain devices, whether it be electronic instruments, instrumental sections, backing instruments such as violins to give it that extra atmosphere. Each member of the band is extremely talented, and down to earth. They put their hearts and souls into their work and gigs. They appreciate their fans, this is about true music, this is about Lacuna Coil. They are absolutely FLAWLESS
Lacuna Coil are ever evolving, their name means "empty spiral" which is their perception of life. each one of their songs has a deeper meaning behind it. How can you possibly dislike this band, they are absolutely mind blowing, especially LIVE.
Advantages: Ms Scabbias Lyrics Disadvantages: Not for those who like their music light and fluffy
...Aeon [WAAF Radio Acoustic]
Comalies is the title of the third album from Italian goth metalers lacuna Coil. Their sound hasn't changed but this album is no copy of their debut. Their sound has improved but without a revolution that would have already captured fans running for the hills. The album is a balanced mixture of Gothic Metal/Rock, with loads of atmosphere - mainly coming from the soaring operatic vocals of female singer Christina Scabbia, ... ...Ferro the thunder to Christians lightning. Although some people are not fond of Ferro's offerings I find that his strong vocals add a great juxtaposition to Ms Scabbias voice.
The extra tracks on the bonus CD although just acoustic versions of songs, that chances are if you're a fan, you will already own and still worth their weight in gold. Unspoken being a particular diamond - vocals to bring tears to your eyes and lyrics to match, I have been ...

Album Notes
Limited edition two-disc reissue. Representing a classic case of delayed fame, Italian goth-metal act Lacuna Coil broke into the American music consciousness via a much talked-about showing on the Ozzfest 2004 second stage, nearly two years after the release of their third album, COMALIES. Similar to its American counterparts Evanescence, this European sextet features the dual vocals of Cristina Scabbia and her male counterpart, Andrea Ferro. Despite the liberal amounts of keyboards added to the mix, guitarists Cristiano Migliore and Marco Biazzi more than hold their own, pumping choppy riffs into the 1980s-sounding "Self Deception" and the simmering opener "Swamped." What makes Lacuna Coil so unique in an often musically conservative genre is the band's ability to dabble with ethereal dynamics. Such is the case with the soaring title cut and equally potent "The Ghost Woman and the Hunter," both of which blend neo-classical riffing, swirling synth runs and a perfect juxtaposition of light and heavy vocal phrasing. To commemorate the group's Ozzfest 2004 stint, COMALIES was re-released with a bonus disc featuring nine cuts that include a mix of live and studio acoustic performances, along with videos for "Heaven's a Lie" and "Swamped."
