I first heard the single "don’t know why" one day on the radio. This was back in January 2003 and it was cold, or so cold. This song warmed me up and opened my eyes to something new.
Afterwards I started searching for the name. It is annoying when you here a song but don’t catch the name. That is what happened with this. Anyway a month later I caught wind of the name "Norah Jones" After finding this out I brought "come away with me" and ended up staying round "Jones's" for an extended tea break that encompasses her new album "feels like home". However this isn’t about "feels like home"
This album is the first album I ever did get myself. It set a high standard in the music I listened to from the day I got it. Her music sooths the soul and allows people to forget that bad things are happening in the world. And the album does so in an UN assuming and undemanding way. Norah’s Vocals are Outstanding and her Piano skill is exquisite. Those are the main things I love about this album.
However it’s a complete showcase just dedicated for showing Norah’s skill. The band doesn’t take any credit for the music that they create. This is a good thing because her voice wows you but it is also a bad thing. You also get wowed by some of the tunes the band creates. Though Norah herself heartily claps what the band do for the album, they still don’t get given much credit. Its what’s in a name? And its what the new album has righted. Ok...Groans and moans about the musical politics of the people at blue not aside, lets get on with the review.
Come away with me is a brilliant album. The undertone of the album is one of missed chances and mourning of the heart. For the most part her songs are of missed chances and foolish mistakes. Though if I were to say they were love songs or even if I were to say they were mournful love songs would not do her the credit she deserves. So I will say that her songs are vague...Lets start with "don’t know why"
Don’t know why. {Jesse Harris}
This song is a song about a woman {or possibly a man, Its penned by Jesse Harris} who has left her partner by the "house of fun". She was meant to meet up again but she never did. Now she is asking herself why. This song is full of self-reproach. It is a brilliant and beautiful song that is done in a way so that you will not grow tired of her asking herself why? This is a beautiful introduction to perhaps one of the greatest singers of the modern world. In time this song will proof to be a classic.
This song is guilty of being a song of innocence. It’s about a little girl who is singing and dancing to her favourite song. It is penned by Norah's fiancé Lee so it is easy to assume that this is either a memory of his about a little girl who he saw singing a song, or it is a memory of Norah's that she shared with him and they have made a song out of it. Either way this doesn’t matter. This song is not a song you are meant to
hold to memory. It is in a way like the little girl. Innocent, Singing to her favourite song and oblivious to the trials and dangers of the world. There will always be a little girl like to the one depicted in this song. Just like after you here this it will always be with you. It is a simple song with no real meaning. It will always be in some recess of your mind waiting to be brought up again.
Cold cold heart. {Hank Williams}
It’s a Hank Williams classic. It’s about this person who is trying to melt another person heart. {No not literally} Being a Hank Williams song it is safe to say the one who originally had an iced heart was a woman. It’s about a woman who was hurt before in a relationship and a man who is trying to court her. As with all covers I will not say more then I have done. This song sounds great live. Norah's Vocals shine brilliantly in this song and the band playing is excellent. This is a brilliant cover of an already great song. Unlike a lot of cover songs {which try and better the originals} Norah's version of "cold cold heart" is an ode to the original. This version of his classic would make the guy proud.
Feeling the same way. {Lee Alexander}
People. This song {believe it or not} is about a hangover. This is another that is penned by her Fiancée. Is it I or is she living with an alcoholic? This song would probably kill you if you were out on the boozer the night before. Just imagine waking up to here. "Another day that I cant find my head, My feet don’t look like they’re my own, ill try and find the floor below to stand, I hope I reach it once again" Despite the fact that you would end up strangling someone if you woke up the morning after with a hangover and this was playing, {I know...I’ve experienced it} its a beautiful song. It’s a 1 in 14 chance that this song would be playing. If you left cawm on repeat and consumed heavy alcohol then the chances of this playing the next morning are 1 in 14. Despite this it is a good song regardless
Come away with me. {Norah Jones}
Finally the title song. What makes this song so good? Well one thing to think about is the words. Who among the men reading this review would not want to come away with Norah Jones? She is one of those people who are completely transformed without spectacles. Norah's face aside this song is a love song. It’s a heartfelt one at that. It’s a song you play when you want to convince the guy/gal in your life to come away with you. The telepathic message is this. Listen to the singer. Listen to the song. Just like everyone who listens to the song ends up falling head over heels for Norah {well the guys anyway, The gals get jealous} you will fall head over heels for me and be mine forever mwahahahaha. Anyway...back to the topic. This song will probably be another of her classics. It’s just got the classic sound to it. A person might like her other songs more but in 10 years time the drum roll will announce this song. Its one of those songs that everyone will know from the first second. It’s a Brilliant song there is no doubt. Because of this, and because of its timeless quality it will be a classic song that will be remembered and revered for all eternity.
Shoot the moon. {Jesse Harris}
After you here the timeless flagship of the album "come away with me" you could be disappointed with "Shoot the moon" Indeed those who take the music seriously usually are. However this song is vague. There are no hidden meanings in this song. Nor is it meant to have a purpose. In a way this song is a story about two people who love each other. However because of differences in life styles and probably a travel issue they cant be together. I can’t say this for certain. See the song in any way you will. Like all Norah Jones songs it is beautiful. When you listen to the song it depicts a sense of vague loss and continuation.
Turn Me On. {JD Loudermilk}
This is another classic cover. When I first heard this I thought to myself that she was like a bucking bronco. She won’t settle down to a particular style. Indeed she won’t. However Norah is the type of singer that can sing almost anything well. She could sing the alphabet and you would be in awe. {Has she got elfin blood in her veins?} Once again she has took another persons song and transformed it. The difference is I have never heard a copy that she has done sound bad. The creator of this song and the original singer would be proud of this cover.
Lonestar {Lee Alexander}
This song must be a song that is dedicated to Norah. Strange that she should sing a song that her Fiancée has created in dedication to her. It’s obvious that Norah is the star and Lee is the one waiting for her presence. This song is sweet and cute. It also sounds amazing
I’ve got to see you again {Jesse harries}
This song is about a woman who wants to see a guy she fell in love with again. It appears they are lovers. However he cheats on her but she don’t care. Despite her misgivings and despite her better judgement she forgives him his wrongs. This song is one of the most vocally expressive songs Norah has ever sung. Finally you get to see the full ability of her voice. Here is where you find out how beautiful her voice really is. The 8 songs before {though all great} you got the impression she was holding out on you. This is Norah’s voice when she allows her emotions to play. Such power, such strength, so beautiful her voice affects you physically. If the whole album were like this then the average listener would end up a cabbage.
This song seems to be about an old love. It seems like it’s a song about a memory of what once was. It appears the object of affection either moved on or died. Looking at the lyrics it seems like the one being painted died. This song is beautiful and sad. The lyrics are great and mournful. This song will either depress you or bring back fond memories.
One flight down {Jesse Harris}
My own personal favourite song on the whole album. The way I interpret this song is thus. There is a song that was playing down a flight of stairs in another flat. You only just picked up the sound though. Like a lot of things in life you find out that the song is not what you once thought. It’s a song about change and a person’s perception. The song does a great job in getting you to think. That and the fact that the vague sadness portrayed in this song will make you cry. Its One of the best songs on the whole album
Nightingale {Norah Jones}
This is another of Norah’s songs. It’s about a nightingale that starts singing a song to the listener. The listener is fed up with their current life and all the pressures. When the nightingale gets ready to go the listener asks whether they can go with the nightingale. As standard this song is beautiful. Indeed out of all the songs she has done I wonder if I will ever be able to say that a Norah Jones song is not beautiful. Nope
The long day is done {Jesse Harris/Norah Jones
Turn on song. Sit back. Grab your wine and chill. The message of this song is simple. Its one of the most long-winded {In Norah’s case not a bad thing} songs on the whole album. Things this song is great for. Chillin you out...Sending you into slumber. Things this song isn’t great for. Energising you. You wont be dancing to this. In fact its safe to say you won’t ever dance to any of Norah’s songs. This song is absolutely pig ugly...Now where’s that lOl icon when you need it? {Damn didn't work} Suffice to say what I just said isn’t true. This song isn’t ugly in fact it...But I aren’t going to say the B word. I said that way too much already. How about this. Its prettier then a very pretty thing indeed.
The Nearness of you {Hoagy Carmichael}
I would like to mime the copyright form here, I say this because I am fed up of the B word {Beautiful} and I am fed up of not having anything bad to say about mars Jones. You can be too perfect you know. The 3rd cover on the whole album. As with most Norah Jones covers you can expect a well-done and well-crafted cover of an already great song. You can also expect great vocals {comes as standard...If not the case then there is something wrong with the product} and great and feather fingered piano playing that will mess with your senses.
Bonus Tracks. {Special Edition}
Ruler of my heart. 2.59 . The dirty dozen Brass band *
Norah goes away from her own band a minute to team up with the Dirty dozen brass band. Now I don’t know who it was that created this song but I’m guessing it was the band. This song is a strict love song of the finest element. It’s happy and its fun to listen to and it sounds great. Norah puts on a standout performance.
Cold cold heart. {Live}
This is the hank Williams cover that Norah did. Only this one is a recording of an actual life performance. Its better then the original recording. You might take a bit of time to warm to it. Until you realise the actual musical progression of the song done life you wont appreciate it. This sounds really good.
Ill be your baby tonight {?*} 3.16
Once again the original singer of this song eludes me. I’m pretty sure it isn’t a song created by the Norah Jones clan. This is another love song and it’s about two people in a romantic setting. This is perhaps the most romantic song I have ever heard her sing.
This song is in a few ways like to “the long day is over” It’s about resting and thinking in a special place where you can just relax and meditate for a while. Another of the songs she has covered that took a bit of time getting used to. However after a bit of time this is a very rewarding song.
The bottom line...
Norah Jones has created a musical masterpiece with "come away with me". However she suffers from the fact that she is too damn good. This album will after a while will be discarded to some place where it is kept safe. In 40 years time when I am over 60 I will be saying "music isn’t what it used to be"{grumble}. This will be the same with many people. Most of us will probably be holding an ancient copy of "come away with me" as we utter those words. Through the years musical tides change. This album came when people were getting fed up with angst singers that constantly say how un innocent we all are. Music is a cycle that represents the mood of the general public. Some people might get fed up with her great vocals but she will always have a legion of fans that want to here her great voice. No one can deny that she has not got a great voice.
Reasons to buy this cd...
You want to here a great voice then get this. You want to have something easy to fall asleep to then get this. You want to chill, get this. You want to woo your spouse, get this...This is an essential album. It is part of a collection of cds that are a must have. Anyone seriously into music should have this. They should have it for the sake of having it alone.
Well that’s the review. All done and dusted. I would just like to let people know that most of this has already been written by me for the purposes of another review site called Epinions. However the 4 added tracks are not on the other site. Also this is the word checked{Grammar corrected hopefully}Thingyumwatsit.
* If anyone could remind me of the creators of those 2 songs I would be happy to be told.

What you have written is great - your love of this album really comes across - but to get higher ratings you would have to give more details about the different tracks, price etc. Great start, hope you write lots more!
In Come Away with Me, it is not just the timbre of Norah Jones's voice that is mature ... more
