Advantages: Lovely story, festive, well written Disadvantages: Short
Alison Dunwoody thought she had it all - a great job, good salary and a great life in New York City. But when the recession hits, Alison is shocked to find that she's lost her job. She's too embarassed to tell her family, and instead decides to fly home to Ireland and have Christmas with her parents, sister and 3 gorgeous nieces. Alison loves the feeling of being back home, but misses her new friend Jack from New York - he knows about her job loss and she can confide in him. Will Alison be able to keep her secret away from her family for her holiday? Or is ComingHome exactly what Alison needs to make her feel happy again?
I have enjoyed a few Patricia Scanlan novels in the past, but I haven't read anything by her in a while now. I am a bit partial to anything festive so when I saw that her latest book was going to be based ...
Advantages: classic animation, well written story, gentle humour Disadvantages: dialogue and themes aimed at the over 8's but nothing unsuitable for younger viewers
they had shared, Snoopy packs his doggy bowl and goes off to the city to see Lila. Once at the hospital, he is again confronted with "No Dogs Allowed", but is determined to not let that stand in his way. In the meanwhile, a very heartbroken Charlie Brown notices his pet is missing, and the Peanuts gang set out to locate him, and bring him home. Will Snoopy comehome? Will he realise that Charlie Brown loves him with all his heart? And will manipulative Lila reclaim Snoopy's affection?
Covering the themes of love, affection, and loyalty in depth, a good bit of the dialogue will go above the heads of the under 8 crowd. For example:
Patricia "Peppermint Patty" Reichardt: What do you think love is, Chuck?
Charlie Brown: Well, years ago, my dad owned a black 1934 two-door sedan.
Patricia "Peppermint Patty" Reichardt: What's that got ...
Advantages: Well-written, realistic, deep character portrayal Disadvantages: Very long, complexity can be confusing
I didn?t read ComingHome until after I?d seen ITV?s dramatisation of it, and even then I only picked it up because I saw it in a second-hand bookshop. I can only say I?m glad I did; contrary to what I had expected from a dramatisation which left out several major characters and a number of plot threads, this book has a level of complexity which effectively portrays the chaos of wartime life without harping on it too much.
The book?s focus is on a young girl, Judith, who stays with a friend?s family in Cornwall during the summer holidays while her parents are in Singapore, then grows up to become a major part of their household, even after war breaks out and she joins the WRNS. You get the strong feeling whilst reading the book that while Judith is most of the time surrounded by friends, she is also very much alone, as are most ...

Album Notes
Tibetan singer Yungchen Lhamo burst onto the world-music scene in 1996 when TIBET, TIBET, a collection of Tibetan prayers, was released on Peter Gabriel's Real World label. Her second album, COMING HOME, is equally beautiful, featuring the singer's pure soprano and gentle, delicate phrasing. While less overtly traditional than TIBET, TIBET, largely due to instrumental coloring via guitar and synthesizer, the accompaniment still complements and frames Lhamo's spectacular voice, which is at once otherworldly and as soft as a caress. Those familiar with Lhamo's life story--which involves escaping the tyranny of Tibetan rule, working tirelessly in refugee camps, and devoting herself to the performance of devotional Buddhist music--will find COMING HOME all the more enchanting, inspirational, and moving.
