The movie with the same name (which in turn is based on a novel by the famous Irish writer Roddy Doyle) is about a group of young people in Ireland who decide to put a band together, and even though this is not a review about the film it is near impossible to write a review of the soundtrack without mentioning the film, especially in this case as the film ...
...the things that made The Commitments such a success is the voice of Andrew Strong, the lead singer in the group. It's a well known fact that he was only 16 years old when the movie, and subsequently the album, was made which to this day I find astonishing. ...American inside with the Commitments soundtrack. The Film was great and showed that great films can come from Ireland. The soundtrack contains all of the hits from the film including Mustang Sally and Try a Little Tenderness. The lead singer in the film played by Andrew Strong is obnoxious but bloody hell what a voice. Just wait till you play it full tilt from your stereo. ...I recently saw the commitments on tour (yes they really do still tour as a band), they still have a couple of the original cast members too. They were absolutley fantastic live !!! However, this revue is more about the lead singer from the film, you remember "Deco", the slob with the unreal voice, well, unfortunatley he is not part of the touring group, the current lead singer is great though but I wondered what had happened to "Deco" (Andrew Strong) ...
...enjoyed the soundtrack from the commitments film is even better, his choice of material suits his voice and style perfectly, in fact, it has been on the CD player constantly, a few of my wife's freinds heard it and have now bought the album too !! It's so strange that someone of this man's ability has been neglected by the music industry, perhaps they are more interested in churning out the current dancy / poppy mind numbing dross which is sung ...
