Advantages: The fundamentals - Classic Big Band Style Jazz Disadvantages: Sound quality was poor
DukeEllington composed many interesting traditional jazz music suited at that time for big band style. Amongst the popular music he wrote were Mood Indigo, It Don't Mean A Thing, Caravan, Chelsea Bridge and many more. His compositions in my opinion were very radical compared to those of the traditional era which cause some people to dislike it. It applies more tension chords as ever, bringing in modern jazz concepts and adapting them in a traditional context.
He is however one of the legends in the field of jazz and although many do not know him, they have heard of him. Many of his songs are taken today and played in small group bands, trios and quartets and improvised to meet modern expectations.
I personally enjoyed the tracks because I am a jazz fanatic. What I didn't enjoy was the poor recording quality which is probably ...

Advantages: Duchess is one of the best Genesis tracks. Disadvantages: Some nasty synth-pop and bland tracks
The three remaining members of Genesis hit the 1980s by starting to write synth-pop songs. Their prog-rock roots hadn't entirely disappeared though. leaving some of the material on this album neither pop nor prog and suffering as a result. Initially they created a suite of songs about "Duke", and then split up the suite and added other tracks, keeping the title for the entire album.
Opening with a joyful fanfare, "Behind The Lines" sounds like it is going to be another good Genesis instrumental, however after a couple of minutes it decends into a rather mundane song with only an occasional glimpse of how it started. Luckily the Genesis magic hasn't completely gone just yet as "Duchess" is a glorious track. I love those drum machine sounds and swirling synths. The whole track has a raising-hairs-on-the-back-of-the-neck energy. This is ...
Advantages: Cracking food and a good price - for a pub! Disadvantages: A bit small for buggies, awkward downstairs toilet access.
stairs and although I can't speak for the gents I imagine they'd be the same as the ladies so please, watch your head as the ceiling is so low in the toilet cubicles that if you happen to be 5ft 6" (like me) and get up too fast, you could end up concussing yourself on the arched ceiling. Having said that, the two cubicles themselves are always spotlessly clean, the basin has L'Occitaine handwash and hand cream and they also have one of those rather zippy Dyson Blade hand dryers plus a fair sized mirror for general hair and facial faffage.

If you are in the neighbourhood then yes, although there are lots of eateries in SJW if you can get into The Duke then I'd say go there. Its food that feeds you and not just food that fills you up.

Producer: George Avakian. Reissue producer: Phil Schaap. Recorded live at the Newport Jazz Festival, Newport, Rhode Island on July 7, 1956. Includes liner notes by George Avakian and Phil Schaap. Digitally remastered by Phil Schaap (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York). What makes this classic recording endure is the monumental level of intensity the band brings to each number. Ellington, in speaking of the band's competitive nature, recalled that they were all in a particularly fesity mode for this performance. That crackling energy translates to every number, and even extended to Count Basie's original drummer Jo Jones, who sat grinning from ear to ear in the front row, so moved by the swing of it all that he beat time for the band with a rolled up copy of The Christian Science Monitor. From Johnny Hodges' ultra-suave "Jeep's Blues," to Paul Gonsalves' epic tenor marathon on "Diminuendo And Crescendo In Blue" (which set the crowd to dancing and screaming), ELLINGTON AT NEWPORT is one of the really great big band recordings.
