complex rhythmic interplay and oblique vocalised melodies with his better-known contemporary Thelonious Monk, his more elongated gait and linear propulsion suggest 20th-century classicism and the polyphony of New Orleans, much as Monk's more jagged phrasing seems to extend on devices originated by icons of the Harlem stride school and the bent note inflections of rural blues guitarists. These Blue Note sides represent the complete output of five visionary sessions Nichols recorded for producer Alfred Lion in 1955-1956 and reflect the pianist's profoundly drum-like aesthetic in which melodies derive directly from complex root syncopations. Nichols' ability to orchestrate percussive passages on the fly inspires a thrilling level of contrapuntal interplay from drummers Art Blakey and Max Roach that serves to transform his intricate song-forms into edgy, propulsive drum concertos. More significantly, Nichols eschews empty riffing over chord changes in favour of a deconstructionist approach in which thematic ideas are recast in a spacious, loping, orchestral style that makes medium strolls such as "Lady Sings the Blues" and minor gallops such as "Riff Primitif" so darkly romantic and hypnotically swinging. It's as if Nichols could keep extending and elongating his azure melodic elisions for eternity.--Chip Stern

Album Reviews: Down Beat (12/95, p.70) - 5 Stars - Excellent - "...Very rarely has so much transcendent piano trio music from a moment in time been gathered in one place....Jarrett's trio has now achieved a level of intuitive interaction with few precedents in the history of jazz..." Musician (11/95, pp.92-94) - "...sets the standard for standards....It's a gourmet feast--which...is almost an oxymoron. Listen in small doses; it goes down better....Where most bands build their solos on a rhythm groove, Jarrett constructs a melodic groove from which the rhythm grows..." Entertainment Weekly (1/12/96, p.57) - "...Maudlin yet lyrical, reverent yet free spirited, pianist Jarrett at 50 is at the peak of his game, and this trio, with drummer Jack DeJohnette and bassist Gary Peacock, is a unified organism, breathing new life into familiar jazz standards....May well be 1995's finest jazz release." - Rating: A+
Advantages: Unparalleled playing, Unbelievably good bargain for 6 CDs! Disadvantages: Um, paper sleeves? No, seriously, it's great
...This box set comprises recordings from 1985-89, when Horowitz was 81 years old! In 1986 Horowitz returned to Russia after 60 years away to give his monumental Moscow recital of which the live recording is included in this set. I personally find this performance of Liszt's Sonetto 104 del Petrarca to be the finest ever recorded. Alongside this is Scarlatti, Mozart, Rachmaninov, Scriabin, Schumann, Chopin, Moszkowski, and Schubert.
Accompanying this recital is 5 other discs of outstandingly unique playing. As he got older, Horowitz's playing became a sort of caricature of itself in the nicest possible way. By this I mean, his dynamics became more extreme, he became more expressive than ever, and his sense of style was heightened to new levels. Horowitz's Mozart playing has been criticized for being too free and not in Mozart...
