Unlike groups such as the shadows Axel Rudi Pell created a band fronted by a top singer rather than just making instrumental albums. Pell's guitar style is classic traditional melodic heavy metal with many of their tracks being rock ballads, which is most evident with the release of three albums called the ballads 1, 2 and 3. To showcase his musical talents on the guitar Axel would need a fantastic lead singer to bring in the minions of rock fans, which he successfully accomplished with singer Johnny Gioeli. ...surprised and amused to find out that the CD is filled with modern material, and was released in 1992! Some of the tracks are old blues standards from the pens of such legendary blues greats as John Lee Hooker and Johnny 'Guitar' Watson, some are original pieces by Johnny himself. In fact, bizarre as it might seem, some of his own work sounds even more traditional than the works he covered. For example, Low Down Gal of Mine could easily have come from some rare recording session from the very early 1920s, only recently re-discovered in an old recording studio. (Yes, it really IS that good!) Johnny's other work, Leavin' Blues (complete with nicely understated blues slide guitar) is just about as good, too. His style can drift from Delta Blues to Chicago Blues via the slightly more countrified Texas Blues. The latter is unsurprising... Read review

...After a few years of no releases from Adam Ant, there seems to be something of a revival at the moment. With the Antbox boxed set released in december and now this excellANT CD. The Complete Radio 1 Sessions is exactly what it says on the cover. The tracks are taken from four recording sessions at Radio 1. Tracks 1-4 recorded for John Peel 23/1/78, tracks 5-8 recorded for John Peel 10/7/78, tracks 9-12 recorded for John Peel 26/3/79 and tracks 13-15 recorded for Simon Mayo 13/1/95 16 years later.
