The Cello Concerto was written for the cellist who performs on this disc, Julian Lloyd Webber (that’s right, Andrew’s brother). He’s one of the world’s great performers and was deeply involved in the work’s writing, making various technical suggestions, which Glass, with a complete lack of ego, listened to and acted upon. Lloyd Webber gave the first performance in Beijing in October 2001.
Those well acquainted with Glass’ style will find ... ...a few brief chords, the concerto ends. 4 Concerto-Fantasy: Movement 1. This work is a very different animal from the one preceding it, though as with all Glass there are trademark similarities. It opens with a wildly exuberant tune hammered out by the timpani and orchestra, setting the tone for the whole movement.
