I was listening to King Crimson last night. The CD the concise Crimson king. This CD was released sometime in the 90’s; the sticker on the cd case says 14.99 from our price. We have owned it for a few years now. I listened to King Crimson a lot in my youth. When I was a teenager I preferred progressive rock to pop music. In the early seventies you could spot me in my long skirts with long hair, no shoes listening to alternate music, wanting to escape the establishment wanting to change the world not is like my parents generation. Guess it’s like all teenagers of all generations. I have somewhere lots of vinyl one day will transfer it to CD but until those days I can get a taster of King Crimson from this CD with tracks from records from 1969- 1981.
Track 1 is 21st century schizoid man (7:20) from “In the court of the Crimson King 1969. A heavy rock really progressive man, errrrr I was only 16 then and was just awakening to the progressive music scene not poppy stuff that everyone else liked I wanted to be different. A good beat on this track with weird noises some synthesizer used here. This is really weird that’s why I loved it. “Cat's foot, iron claw. Neuro surgeons scream for more At paranoia’s poison door’. Twenty first century schizoid man.”
Track 2 is epitaph (7:21) This song has a gentler rhythm, a sad haunting air about death and the things we have done, and the impressions we leave behind, “Confusion will be my epitaph. As I crawl a cracked and broken path If we make it we can all sit back and laugh. But I fear tomorrow I'll be crying, Yes I fear tomorrow I'll be crying” Sorry couldn’t help singing along there
Track 3 in the court of the crimson king (abridged) (7:21) In the court of the crimson king starts gently, thoughtful. Long notes and fairly bright wondrous tones of music. “ The yellow jester does not play But pulls the strings in the court of the crimson king ahhhhhhhhhhhhhah ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh ahhhhh ahhhhhhhahhhhhhhhhhhhahhhhh ahhhhhhhhhhhh sorry singing again. This track is quite mystic. Contains a rock beat throughout Track 4 cat food (2:45) from the record “In the wake of Poseidon” 1970 This short track is less mystic, contains more words and some laughter, I can hear a lot of piano notes in this and later some drum beats.
Track 5 ladies of the road (5:31) Now we get into Ladies of the road a little singing then drum beats to the singing, Oh this is naughty song, “ Black hair and black suspender Said please me no surrender, Just want to feel your fender, All of you know that the girls of the world are like apples we stole in our youth. This track was from Islands 1971
Next track 6 starless (abridged) (4:38) from the LP Red produced 1974, A bit more beat in this tune starting with guitar and Fast drum beats, the tune changes pace in the middle a little slower longer heavier notes, then it changes back to the lighter quicker notes some notes soaring to a finish.
Track 7 is red from the LP Red followed by track 8 fallen angels also from red. The drumming on Fallen Angel is particularly good Bill Bruford is the drumming wizard’
Track 9 elephant talk (4:42) from the album discipline 1981. “ Talk talk its only talk arguments, agreements” A steady rock beat all the way through “ chatter chit chat chit chat” I am tapping my feet nodding my head. Its simple uncomplicated music “”
Track 10 Frame by frame. “Frame by frame death by drowning, In your arms in your arms “ A consistent drum beat still a few weird noises”
Matte kudesai is track 11 a haunting sad song “She sleeps in a chair in a cloud of fairy dust, She sleeps in a chair in a sad America ” A short 3 minute 48 second song.
Track 12 is “heartbeat” (3:54) from the record beat a lot of steady rhythm in this tune the words “I want to feel your heart beat, so close to mine”
Next track 13 three of a perfect pair (4:11) from the LP three of a perfect pair. Bill Bruffords drumming again is prominent, Fripp on guitar. Strong heavy beat and wailing guitar and Adrian Belows vocals.
Track 14 Sleepless also from three of a perfect pair In Sleepless I can hear tom toms, I can hear a constant fast beat. “It’s alright get a hold of yourself, Its alright its over you’re your head.” I can feel the sleepless anxieties going through my head the constant beat keeping niggling worrying turning over problems as you do and cannot get to sleep The record three of a perfect pair was released in1984 So finishes this CD. The music continuous no breaks between tracks Well that was a great memory trip listening enjoying the music , remembering where I was what I was doing when each record was produced remembering growing up with King Crimson . over the time that the Cd covers the band line up did change a little but Still produced magical music .Thanks for reading do go and listen to some King Crimson .
