Confessions - Usher
A CD is always more compelling when you know it's lifted from the artist's autobiography, ... more
and that's certainly the case withConfessions, Usher's first record since 2001's8701. The Atlanta singer's string of hits over the past decade have been decidedly under-18s rated, almost veering towards teen pop, but he's changed all that on this coproduced offering, which he claims is "the real him". It would be too simplistic to just brand this record a break-up record, chronicling his public split with TLC's Rozonda "Chili" Thomas; it is that, but so much more. It would be more accurate to call this Usher's coming-of-age record, bridging the gap from boy to man, as he navigates the emotional fallout from the disintegration of his relationship and the events that led up to it--real or imagined. But other than a guilty conscience, it seems unclear why Usher feels compelled to disgorge his secret life, as he documents his infidelities, transgressions and emotional perfidy in the album's prodigious 17 songs that range from insinuating sultry R&B grooves to the decidedly crunky "Yeah", which pairs an insistent keyboard romp with Lil' Jon's assertive beats and Ludacris' rather humid rhymes. This tracks shines all the more since it's the only club track, but you find yourself pining for more, since most of the other songs tend to get bogged down in his lush, feverish balladry. That's not a bad thing, but the disc would have been better served by a few more muscular tracks.--Jaan Uhelszki, Amazon.com

Listening to the powerful beginning of the [Intro], you know this album is going to have it's own very true meaning of each song.
Hard to hate, easy to love because Usher knows how to make each song unforgettable. No matter how many other influential singers out there with there powerful albums, Usher's Confessions is memorable, always.
I personally think that this is one of the best albums to get out there, one of the truest artist there is.In my opinion people MUST HAVE this album. Every song is brilliant in its own way.
[Beats] - must say, its all very different - just hearing the instrumentals, you can tell it's a part of Usher's album..
[Lyrics] - The way he sings each song, you cannot forget the lyrics, it's in him to make every song of his addictive.
[Voice] - AMAZING! He knows how to put the meaning in music.
He knows how to sing, and to relate to reality, very original..
P.S. - brilliant for people who love slow jams. [Beginning to end, worth every listen..]

This album is brilliant and probably the best album I won or have ever heard. Every song is good ... ...then you will definitely like this album. I have listened to this album so many times but still think it's brilliant. My favourites, although all of them are, include 'Yeah', 'Throwback', 'Burn', 'Caught Up' 'Confessions', 'Bad Girl' and 'Do it to me'. Certain tracks are vey up to beat and I often listen to them before I go out- to a club, etc. These include Yeah, Caught Up, Throwback, Bad Girl, Follow me and Take Your Hand.
Others are of a slower ...

Advantages: nice new packaging Disadvantages: only 3 extra tracks
Usher is undoubtbly the king of R'nB' right about now. forget justin it's all about usher. this album has crunk beats produced by the king of 'Crunk' himself 'lil John' bringing his ATL flavour. for the number 1 club banger yeah, it also has the songstrees herself 'Alicia Keys' for the duet 'My Boo'. Usher's original 'Confessions' album, was a hit with me. he has variouse unreleased tracks that still didnt make it onto this album, like 'Dot Com'. ... ...to have more subtance, surley if you have bought the original 'confessions' album what would make you want to buy the new reppackage when it doesnt have that much extra content. the label could have at least added some more remixes to the new repackage. Nevertheless the album has got good content, and this is a true reflection of Usher's talent, it has the slowjams for those nights when you are with your other half. and also the party dance tracks ...

Usher has been a symbol of tender sexuality ever since he shifted from teenage sensation to soulful superstar. He's breathtakingly good at what he does; possessing that undefinable essence known to a select few soul crooners (Al Green, D'Angelo, etc.) who radiate sensuality through song, Usher has reached an apex on the sultry CONFESSIONS, his fifth studio album. After the obligatory intro, Lil Jon kicks in with his exhortations on the catchy, dance-floor-ready single "Yeah." Usher follows that up with the sublimely sweet "Throwback," a torch song with a fantastic Motown hook. On "Confessions Part II," he exposes his most vulnerable side when admitting to his lover that he's fathered a child with another woman. Exemplifying his versatility, Usher follows the standard pop ballad "Simple Things" with the guitar-riff-driven "Bad Girl," somewhere between 1970s funk and '80s Prince. CONFESSIONS is the sound of an R&B luminary at the top of his game.
Album Reviews: Rolling Stone (4/15/04, p.151) - 3 stars out of 5 - "[Songs such as 'Yeah' create] sensual panic by combining Usher's jumpy attacks with [Lil Jon's] sublime, frayed beats." Entertainment Weekly (3/26/04, p.72) - "The vocalist reveals his new-found maturity by opening with the grittiest song he's ever done....The ensuing track glides smoothly between club-friendly hip-hop soul and ballads." - Grade: B+p Q (p.107) - 3 stars out of 5 - "[H]e's a fully grown R&B sensation....[With] addictive R&B hooks and all-dancin', all-lovin' subject matter boosted with hot production tweaks."
