LA Confidential is a drama film directed by Curtis Hanson. The screenplay was written by Curtis Hanson and Brian Helgeland, based on a novel written by James Ellroy. The film was released in 1997.
This film is about three different cops in the Los Angeles police department, during the 1950s. Ed Exley (Guy Pearce), is a by the book cop who won't cross the line, Bud White (Russell Crowe) will do anything to bring justice to criminals and Jack Vincennes (Kevin Spacey) is just looking to make a quick buck at the expense of celebrities. The three cops discover corruption in both their own police force and in Hollywood as everyone wants is out to get ahead at whatever cost.
The supporting cast includes Kim Basinger, James Cromwell and Danny DeVito. They are all great in their roles.
This film won two Oscar's, Best Actress in ...
Advantages: Interesting insight into the author's opinions Disadvantages: Sensationalist writing style that irritates
slickly demonstrated by a list of famous women in alphabetical order by first name (made me wonder if brothel madams keep registers...!) interspersed with quotes from the men about each other's seduction habits and from women who had been seduced. That, I have to say, is the most generally unpleasant chapter in written tone. The bright, smiling Ocean's 11 photo on the front cover, emblazoned with the red and black tabloid title "Rat Pack Confidential" belies what is essentially something that leaves you with a bitter taste in your mouth (in retrospect I should have clocked the tabloid ...
Advantages: Funny family chap Disadvantages: No celeb stuff
The book, like the retro comic in question, is a simple and honest read. No long words or pretentious reasoning, just one man telling his story. They say you should only write what you know, and that is exactly what Peter has done here, quite literally! Everything he ever did, however mundane, seems to have ended up in this book, and for that reason alone I don?t think this will appeal to all, especially as he doesn?t include his rise to fame and celebrity, the reason why most people would spend a preposterous £18.95 on it, the autobiography abruptly coming to halt just as we get going.
Maybe its part one of his autobiography. Who knows? Maybe he feels guilty about his fame and fortune and by telling more funny stories on his homely normal life is enough for the Jolly Bolton boy for now, working class guilt getting the better of him ...
