Connected - Statik

Advantages: Groovy and doomy, baby!
Disadvantages: Hmmm - a bit odd for some people.

...Statik Magik is a short and sweet offering from those crazy metallians Cathedral, compromising the previously released Midnight Mountain and three new tracks. I’ve already reviewed Midnight Mountain, so anyone who has read my review of the Ethereal Mirror album will know about the astonishing blast of disco metal which opens this EP. Suffice to say this track never gets old, and never gets boring, no matter how many times I listen to it. Hypnos 164 has the stoner vibe which Cathedral were rapidly becoming famous for, with its bass heavy groove leading the way for a White Zombie style attack, only years before White Zombie popped out of the musical ether. Advantages: Az is back dont miss out
Disadvantages: Some weak productions

...of bling rap with its deft lines. AZ's next offering, "Make Me," features an exceptional Fresh, and while it isn't a brilliant song, does nothing to detract from the album as a whole. The Format continues with "Games," which slips somewhat from the high standards of this LP. With a generic chorus from Sampson and somewhat lacklustre rhymes over one of the few examples of subpar production on the album, "Games" falls short of the level AZ operates on, while remaining a moderately decent song as a whole. AZ falters again on "Rise & Fall," which is a bizarre melange featuring Big Pooh, which comes off more as a disjointed cacophony than a lyrical masterpiece. The ante is upped again with "Animal," however, as he delivers a grimily beautiful track oozing lyricism and imagery in a memorable tour of ghetto life. Produced by Statik Selektah, the hook... .... This version was released on Statik records in 1985. My other version is an American import released on MCA in 1983 just after the first British release. This version is a reduced one with only eight of the tracks from the original album present. The album was also released in 1996 on CD ala the picture above. This is an album that once you have listened to it once you will want to listen to over and over again as I have. If you are a fan of guitar music this really is one that you will want to listen to. If you want to get hold of a copy then I have seen it on Amazon for £6.98 for the CD version released on the Dead Dead Good label. Go on give your ears a treat. ©Docpov June 2007... Read review
