A bird in the hand....

Advantages: Friendly, loving, comical, amusing and entertaining
Disadvantages: Can be noisy, seed spreads everywhere

, the eyes are bright, the bird is active and alert, has dry nostrils and is eating and drinking well. Danger signals are if the nostrils have discharge, the bird is quiet and lethargic, the stance is hunched or the bird is sitting on the floor of the cage and the feathers are ruffled. Temperament - these birds are BOLD! They have little fear of humans so even if you choose a bird that has not been hand reared it should still be possible to tame him with a little time and patience. They are very sassy and independant but also extremely loving and sweet. They do have a tendancy to nip at times - mine does if he thinks I'm not paying him enough attention. If this happens while he is on your hand, drop your hand suddenly - the bird hates the feeling and will let go straight away and if you keep it up each time he tries, he should stop doing ...

Dead Birds

Advantages: creepy, good sound
Disadvantages: slow

time goes on they come to realise that not all is as it seems in this innocuous looking shelter and they soon begin to think that staying there may not have been a good idea. Dead Birds was recommended to me a little while ago and I decided to rent it out to see what it was like. And whilst its title is misleading I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised by the film, it is by no means perfect but it is far from being a complete lemon. On one side the film is fairly original in that it is set during the American Civil War, and in that whole setup looked good to me, the uniforms and the war-weary look in the people's faces all went to create a world that seemed believable and convincing, (to me at least). But it also follows standard genre conventions in that we have a creepy house, complete with a large cornfield that is spooky by ...

Review of Dead Birds (DVD)

Lending a Hand

Advantages: Great characters, story telling and funny
Disadvantages: None too many

Imagine a young man on his way to a less than thirty second event - the loss of his left hand, long before he reached middle age... This is the doorway by which we meet Patrick Wallingford, John Irving's character in the book, firth published in 2001. Those of you who do not know, Mr Irving is the best-selling American author. Born in New Hampshire in 1942, John Winslow Irving is the author of more than ten novels, among them The Cider House Rules, The World According to Garp and A Widow for one Year. Irving is married to Janet and they have three sons. He lives in Toronto and in southern Vermont. I have been reading his works on and off for a long time now and never cease to be enthralled by his prose, narrative and general story-telling. His work is funny and moving, putting people in sometimes bizarre situations ...
