When I heard the tune Lose Control I was addicted straight away, with great artists mixed in, great bass and beats I was hooked!! I have always been a massive Missy Elliott fan and have loved all her previous albums so far, this is why, even though I am a totally poor student I went straight to the supermarket and bought this album.
Being a HUGE Missy fan I am very disappointed to have to admit that I was not very impressed by this album. I knew 'This is Not a Test' would be a hard album to beat but I had every confidence in Missy to do better, but I was wrong. Lose Control is a brilliant song, but it seems to be the only exceedingly brilliant song on there. There are some very good songs e.g. On and On, Party Time, My Struggles and Teary Eyed.
Missy is renowned for her catchy, upbeat songs and The Cookbook is very different from her usual style. There are more slow songs than she usually has on her albums. The only slow song I did enjoy listening to was 'Teary Eyed'.
2. Party Time - This song is the type of song I reluctantly find catchy. It sounds like a song that belongs in the 80s. I do like this song and enjoy listening to it, but I wouldn't play it loudly in my home or in my car as I do enjoy doing with songs because I have to admit I would be embarrassed to do so.
3. Irresistibly Delicious - This tune is quite catchy, I did not like it too much at first but it has grown on me over time. It isn't a slow tune but its not a very fast rap song. Its nice and neutral and has good beat.
5. My Struggles - I also enjoy listening to this tune and liked it straight away, the lyrics are fantastic and seem to be true to her, she seems to speak from the heart in this song.
Songs 13 through to 16 I truly hate, I never get this far into the album ever, I have only listened to these songs once or twice and haven't bothered since. They are a mixture of slow, weird and very un-catchy tunes. I wished she had stopped at song 12 and left the album there, it would at least higher the standard of the whole album.
This album is not completely awful, if it was a debut album from a new artist it would be classed as a very good album, but because we all know Missy and her songs and style and have lots of albums to compare it to, it is a bit disappointing. Many songs are true to her heart, and she seems to be becoming more personal in her lyrics which are good to see.
I would recommend this album, but have to admit that the main reason for this is because I am a true Missy fan, and will always love her!!
