You may wonder how a song like Copacabana could be made into a musical, but with over 2 and a half hours of great music, Copacabana was just the tip of the Iceberg. The music in this show was full of energy, humour, some of the times the songs were sad but all in all this CD captures every musical gift that Copcabana had to offer, if you havn't seen the show it doesn't matter, this CD brings to the imagination the storyline as each record is played in sequence to that of the musical.
Several actors played the lead role of Stephen i this show but Gary Wilmot is the frontman on this CD and is who I actually saw when I went to watch it.
Barry Manilow along with Bruce Sussman and Jack Feldman bring you wonderful breathtaking lyrics . _______________________________________________
The Copacabana Story
Stephen (Gary Wilmot) is writing a song, it is about a showgirl based in the Copa, a nightclub from 45 years ago just after World War II, as he decides on her name "Lola" we are taken back to the year 1947 where a girl named "Lola" from Oklahoma arrives by train at Grand Central Station. Standing with her suitcases, many other girls start to join her from other trains all with one thing in common, to fulfil their dreams of becoming big on Broadway.
Back to Stephen and his song writing, he starts to name the other characters in his song and as we are taken back in time to these characters their backgrounds and dreams become apparent to us all and hence the story behind the famous song "Copacabana" begins to emerge.
This show is Stephen's imagination of Copacabana and it is full of characters of his own creativity. Showgirls, G.I's, waitresses, bus boys, gangsters and the likes all put together to make one hell of a show, and one great performance, this CD just brings to life everything you could ask for to portray Copacabana for the captivating musical it is.
Songs on the CD are:-
Copacabana (Opening Sequence) Just Arrrived Dancin' Fool Night on the Town Man Wanted Lola Who needs to Dream Ay Caramba! Bolero de Amor Sweet Heaven Who am I Kidding? This Can't be Real Welcome to Havana The Mermai's Tale El Bravo Who need to Dream (reprise) Copacabana (Finale)
The CD comes along with the words to all of the songs so there is no excuse to not sing along, you will be.
Recorded in May 1994 at the Palace Theatre, Manchester and at Parr Street Studios, Liverpool
I highly recommend it and after listening to this CD "you will fall in love".
