The year 2003... A year of many music mishaps but fortunately, this wasn't one of them. Coral fang hits the spot where most punk bands dare venture into. It brings out a new sound which gives them their own limelight.
This is the third distillers album and it brings across their feel and the energy they put into their songs. Usually when their songs are recorded you don't get as much as you would live, but this exceeds expectation. As always there is room for improvement, but with an album like this there's not much.
*Cover* In my opinion the cover is a bit of a downside and doesn't really show what the albums about. It protrays a woman on what is assumed to be a cross. She has has a wound on her side which is spraying blood. Alot of people may be offended by this if they are very religious, and it has absolutely nothing to do with the album. I would expect an unusual photograph of the band to be put on an album like this, but then again the fact it doesn't make sense could be slightly appealing. Unusual things are almost always better than the ordinary things.
*Songs* The album has 11 songs in total. For a punk rock album this is pretty average and is as to be expected.
The first song on the album is "Drain The Blood" Which sounds like a typical punk song, but is given an excellent edge from brody dalle's voice. The lyrics go extremely well with the instruments and flow extremely well. You may have seen this song on music channels such as kerrang and scuzz etc, as this song was released as a single aswell (they also have a music video for this song.) 8/10
Second song is "Dismantle Me". Another typical punk sound but it's more upbeat and very easy to mosh and dance to. It's a pretty short and sweet song at only 2mins 26secs but i think this makes it much better. It's not repetitive and makes you want to hear more. Around the end of the song, the men of the distillers sing back up for brody and give the song a very full sound. 8/10
"Die On a Rope" is third and another short song. It's upbeat like most of the songs on the album. The lyrics are very repititive but all the band members sing for the song and it makes it sound new everytime. Although the song is good. I don't think it's one of the better songs on the album. 6/10
"The Gallow Is God" Is not as upbeat as the other songs, but it's still impressive. Still makes you want to bop your head and sing along. It's sultry even though brody's voice isn't soft, and the lyrics are simple yet effective. One of my favourites. 9/10
Number 5 is "Coral Fang" Another favourite of mine. It's very loud and powerful, grinding guitars and a very rhythmic sound coming from brody dalle, this is another short song. Starting to notice all the short songs are the best ones. The lyrics are backed up by other members in the again giving it a very full sounding song. 9/10
"The Hunger" is number 6, it's slow and acoustic at the beginning, and suddenly gets louder and heavier. It's one of the longest songs on the album, but is pretty interesting. In my opinion i would probably skip this song because i find it slightly boring. In the middle of the song there is a guitar solo which i think is just there to fill time to be honest. This is one of the weaker links on the album. 5/10
Describing "Hall of mirrors" is hard because it's such a good song. The sound is so unique, thats it makes me slightly lost for words. They tried something new and pulled it off extremely well. 10/10
"Beat your heart out" Is the love song of the album and they pull it off without sounding too soppy or loved up. And they do it all whiles still upholding their punk sound. Brody's voice gives the lyrics a nice little twist which invites listeners to stay for more. This is another one of my favourites. 9/10
Ironically the next song is "Love is paranoid" It closes the whole punk + love = good song and returns with an in a short, in your face song to say. Love doesn't always end happily. 7/10
"For Tonight You're Only Here To Know" is the tenth song on the album, and in my opinion is a bit of a dissappointment. A weak link to the album but doesn't put it down too much 5/10
"Death Sex" Is the last and longest song on the album and i think it's a bit more of something experimental than an actual song. It's interesting to listen to and makes you want more. Although it is hard to describe because i think it changes quite a bit throughout the 12 min song. 8/10
Overall I think this album is excellent. It gives me everything i would actually ever want in a punk album. From about £6 on amazon it is also very good value for money. I hope everyone else enjoys this album as much as i did.
Advantages: an amzing album packed full of new styles and sounds Disadvantages: Brody's voice maybe a bit to new for old punk rockers.
...now with there third album, Coral Fang (2003) is amazing. The Distillers are getting more and more publicity ,so set the trend because they're going to get much bigger. With Brody's unique vocals burning throughout the entire album. Track List:
1) DRAIN THE BLOOD
This song makes the album start with a bang. This song is racy and upbeat. With soft introduction which slams into the racy chorus featuring lyrics like:
"I never met a pearl quite like ... ...in the sun..."
5) CORAL FANG
The song the album is titled on which has memoriable choruses such lyrics as:
"It feels so still I could just die
Its going to reach up inside
Oh how the blood stains well on white..."
6) THE HUNGER
At the beginning Brody goes straight in toning down her voice to become more melodic and soft sound before breaking into a powerful chorus. Lyrics are:
"Open sky, the wave of pain the scent of you is bliss Hungry eyes, ...

...sinks down in…”- The Distillers, Coral Fang (2003)
BASIC BAND HISTORY: Started by Brody Dalle at age 17, The Distillers were at the time an all girl band, playing fast angry punk music to display their anger at society and culture, hence their first album ‘The Distillers’ (2000) was born.
By the time their second album, the hugely popular ‘Sing Sing Death House’ was out in 2002, some of the band members had changed, ... ...a whole new load of punk tracks had been created to rouse the fans.
Yet again when their most recent album, the hugely successful ‘Coral Fang’ (2003) had hit the shops, the band line-up had changed once more to include Brody, Andy, Ryan and now Tony Bradley on guitar and as a back-up vocalist. These four are now what The Distillers is all about. ‘Coral Fang’ is far more versatile compared to their other albums, but none the ...

Advantages: More of a mainstream sound without losing their edge Disadvantages: The last track
Brody Dalle brings her Distiller boys along for the outing of their third album, ‘Coral Fang’, which sees a departure from their previous hardcore punk-rock style. Opening track and breakthrough single ‘Drain the Blood’ kicks of the album in great style, with catchy guitar riffs complementing brody’s deep vocals throughout. ‘Dismantle Me’ continues in a similar vein, and is another highly catchy track, followed by ‘Die on a Rope’, a track which reverts ... ...‘The Gallon is God’ slows the pace down somewhat, with it’s more sluggish and reflective style, before title track ‘Coral Fang’ picks it up again, with the kind of chorus that implants itself into your head for days on end. ‘The Hunger’ was the second single to be lifted from the album, and provides some variation on the album, changing from soft to powerful between verse and chorus. ‘Hall of Mirrors’ is quite similar to the previous track in it’s ...

Advantages: good lyrics good songs, still brody but... Disadvantages: its not the hardcore punk we know and love.
This is the thrid album for the distillers and the first for a major record label. I think this might explain why the music has gone for a more catchy mainstream feel to bulk up the sales numbers. Fronted by Brody Dalle, australian born and damn right GORGEOUS!!! her voice is heaven and this album does allow for more of that to come across than in past albums. A much softer album but you can still imagine writhing punk masses so theres still hope.
... ...market to attract mainstream attention. The front cover is an eye-catching stylized crucifixion with bleeding razor blades spurting out. If this gets some social rebels attention then the back will seal the deal with a pic of a 'pregnant' person bleeding red razor blades. There's something rather immature about these pics and the other similar ones in the sleeve. The only reason I can see if for the shock factor. It doesn't look great in the cd collection.

OK, so you're into punk, you like the clash, the sex pistols, maybe even rancid, but you think that new "punk" bands just don't cut the mustard, right?
Wrong!
I love punk music but punk got itself a bad name, with bands like blink 182 making everyong think of silly lyrics and childish behaviour when they thought of punk.
Now here we are with a band that takes their own slant on today's issues and wraps it all up in a bunch of metaphors and melodys that will leave you screaming the lyrics at the top of your voice and dancing around the room playing air guitar.
Speaking of guitar, if you happen to be a beginner or want to get into playing but don't know where to start, the distillers helped me learn how to play power chords with tunes that are simple but effective, and a line up that leaves a great taste in your mouth.

Album Notes
The Distillers: Brody Dalle, Tony Bradley (vocals, guitar); Ryan Sinn (vocals, bass); Andy Granelli (drums). A fiercely passionate juggernaut of punk-fueled rock & roll, CORAL FANG goes straight for the throat from the opening surge of "Drain the Blood." The Distillers are the street-worn vehicle of Brody Dalle, who exorcises her former surname, Armstrong (as in Tim Armstrong of Rancid), in almost every hard-charging song on FANG. As far as break-up albums go, this one's a doozy, largely due to Dalle's gargled-with-gravel voice, which makes Courtney Love sound like a dainty 10-year-old schoolgirl. Impressively, Dalle's self-penned tunes match her gutsy singing, and thanks to her proficient band and Gil Norton's muscular production, certain tracks sound like they could be outtakes from Nirvana's IN UTERO, most noticeably the stomping "The Gallow Is God." Other songs--such as "Dismantle Me," "Die on a Rope," "Love Is Paranoid," and the title track--pulse with a faster, frantic punk energy, while "The Hunger" leads off with an acoustic guitar and "For Tonight You're Only Here to Know" is propelled by a catchy, new wave guitar riff. A welcome antidote to the faux angst peddled by many bands, CORAL FANG proves that the Distillers can channel real rage and frustration into some seriously potent music.
