AHHHHHHHHHHHHH! This is one of the most frustrating albums I have ever had to endure... It lives off the reputation of a couple of songs, and frankly, is a dissapointment, and this is coming from someone who didn't have high expectations to start with!
It is a weird mixture of chilled out music, mixed with a couple of 'up-beat' tracks, mixed with fillers (Tracks just put there to make the album long enough to call and album).
She regularly overstretches herself, going for notes that she just cant hit properly, she just does not sing well enough to sing the songs she writes, a couple of her songs have excellent lyrics, but she just can't deliver them to make their full potential. Maybe she should switch to just writing songs and letting others deliver them properly.
You may think I am being harsh, well maybe I am a little... There are a few good tracks on this album, ones I would recommend to download are Put Your Records On, Till it Happens to You and Trouble Sleeping. These three tracks are worth a listen and are the only saving grace for this ablum, they managed to bump it up to a 'Poor' rating.
I have noticed that other reviews have tended to rave about her, I read one saying that she will be the next Carole King... I think it is fair to say that will not happen... She can write the same quality of songs, if she tried really hard, but she would never have the performing skills to really make a classic...
Advantages: Some good tracks, great music to relax too. Disadvantages: A little too much of the same thing
After having had a phenomenal start to the year with the fabulous 'Put Your Records On', Bailey Rae subsequently brought out this much in demand, self-titled debut album. The album starts with the track 'Like A Star', which is a slow, jazzy number. Her vocals are still distinctive but the song is not as catchy or as memorable as 'Put Your Records On'. 'Enchantment' is less jazzy, and also quite unmemorable, fortunately the CD then redeems itself ... ...'Til It Happens To You' which whilst being another slow number has a nice beat with a definite blues feel followed by another single 'Trouble Sleeping' which is a bit livelier again. The haunting strings that play during the introduction of 'Call Me When You Get This' reminds me of a 1960s film soundtrack, although the rest of the track does not offer much more, I was also disappointed with 'Choux Pastry Heart', a very slow, and sombre track that ...

Shes Improving! Review ofCorinne Bailey Rae - Corinne Bailey Raeby
quan
Advantages: Relaxing sounds Disadvantages: Bit boring half way through
...long day at work.
Corinne Bailey Rae has come from bottom rising to the top, with a great start to the year 2006 with "Put your records on" and MoBo award winner, she's now proving what it takes to be a star. Her songs deliver a voice that pins you and relaxes you into her imaginative abyss. With sophisticated song writing I'm really going to support her music because she deserves the attention. Why? Because she is a British artist and she has been ... ...in the underground community.
Listening to her album the style of music that she produces, my perceptions of her is that she almost not trying to follower the footsteps of certain artists who are around today. For example Jill Scott with that poetry flow, Angie Stone who possess natural rhythm and culture, just to name a few. Shes making her own decision on judgement of life and thats what people want to hear. So my verdict is keep trying Corinne, ...

Advantages: Soulful, haunting melodies with meaningful lyrics Disadvantages: Immediately want more.
...I'm a bit of a newbie when it comes to writing album reviews but after hearing this hauntingly brilliant piece of work from the tremendously talented CorinneBaileyRae, I felt compelled to share my feelings with you all.
I'm aware that this style of music will not appeal to all tastes but for those of you who love Put Your Records On - you can't miss it at the moment on the radio - then I would definitely recommend going to her website to get a glimpse of other tracks from the album.
***The Woman***
When I first read on the website that Corinne was from Leeds, I was a little surprised to say the least as she has a sound which is reminiscent of the deep south of America and the blues style that emanated from there in the 1930s and 40s.
At 26 it may seem like she is a late developer for starting a singing career but she has...

Advantages: DIFFERENT FROM THE USUAL COMMERCIAL SONGS Disadvantages: a bit too mellow sometimes
...Presenting to you from Leeds, is CORINNEBAILEYRAE, yes she is from the UK believe it or not. The first time I heard Corinne, I thought she was from some part of the states but she was actually brought up in a small town in Leeds by her West-Indian father and Yorkshire mother.
Corinne is 26 years old and releases her debut album, titled, CORINNEBAILEYRAE. Her voice is surface beautiful, she reminds me of Norah Jones but with a bit more R n' B in her voice. Corinne however sees herself more along the lines of Martina Topley-Bird.
Not only is Corinne a talented soulful singer (she started singing in church like Aretha, Dione and Tina), but she is also a talented songwriter too. She wrote all the songs on her album with the help of other song writers but she did write 'Like A Star' on her own and it is a hit single.
Her...

...Track)
This is a brilliant version of a cover which uses a fantastic sample. You really couldn't expect such a hip-hop/dance song could be transformed into a psychadelic chillout version like this. Great stuff.
5. Keane - Dirrtylicious (Cover Track)
Keane are no strangers to the Radio 1 Studios. They opted to go for a "fun" track. Short at under 3 mins but if you enjoy listening to Radio 1, then you will like this song for its twist on Beyonce's megahit.
6. CorinneBaileyRae - Sexyback (Cover Track)
JT's song Sexyback has been reworked into a jazz version by CorinneBaileyRae. It kinda works, but then the chorus doesn't sound quite so right.
7. Jack Penate - Minute, Second Or Hour
Jack Penate does a solo accoustic of his single Minute, Second or Hour. I quite like it, very stripped back.
8. The Fray - Hips Don't Lie...

Album Notes: Despite the fact that English vocalist Corinne Bailey Rae has the name of a country artist, and got her start playing in a grunge-inspired hard rock band, her self-titled debut is heavily steeped in 1970s-style soul and singer-songwriter intimacy. Rae's girlish, sultry voice might remind some listeners of Macy Gray, while the subtle shadings and jazzy textures of her tunes may bring to mind Nora Jones and Alicia Keys. Yet Rae, who wrote or co-wrote each of the album's 11 tracks and provides much of the album's instrumentation as well, brings a distinctive stamp to the neo-soul formula. Her songwriting is strikingly personal and well-crafted, and her singing, which can be as cool as a Lester Young saxophone solo (the lilting "Like a Star") or as soulful and swinging as Sly Stone (the breakthrough single "Put Your Records On"), sets her apart from the pack. CORINNE BAILEY RAE is a solid and very promising debut.
