Advantages Fantastic theme throughout whole album, musicianship is incredible, very original, very memorable

Disadvantages Can be difficult to get into if all of your senses aren't focused on the album

Obscura are, to say the least, a VERY technical death/thrash metal band hailing from Munich Germany. The band's first album release was titled "Retribution", and what a step up from this - 2009's phenomenal "Cosmogenesis" - is! This album takes the listener on a high speed journey through the mysteries and wonders of the epic galaxy we reside in, whilst opening our eyes to new concepts such as the collision of planets and resultantly, universe expansion; a somewhat depressing but beautiful adventure. This sci-fi like theme is complimented beautifully by the inner sleeve designs, depicting images of new cities emerging through explosive planets; extremely fitting to the overall theme of "Cosmogenesis".

A range of heavy metal elements are combined in this particular album; the song structure and musicianship is extremely technical yet the riffs remain aggressive and downright catchy! A perfect example of this is on the album's opening track and single "Anti-cosmic Overload". The solo's are beautifully melodic, adding a sense of, almost calm to this tech-death frenzy. It's not all about blastbeats and shredding riffs with "Cosmogenesis" however, portrayed fittingly in the middle of the album with the wonderful "Orbital Elements" instrumental. Despite picking out two particular tracks in this review, I must admit, every song was stand out to me. A signature riff was present in each and every track, either that or an insane rhythm, melting solo or memorable lyrics, ensuring that this album is etched in your mind for eternity.

This album will certainly not be one for me to forget. For me, it was not just music, but a journey, with it's enlightening lyrics and theme, eccentric song structures and just down-right amazing musicianship. "Cosmogenesis" has gone straight on my list of favourite metal albums and I'm sure it will yours too if you sit down and listen to it, focus all your senses on this one album, and really experience and feel it. A definite must have for any technical metal fan, I will certainly be checking out more by these bad-boys!
