Pantera's "Cowboys From Hell" is the bands first release on a major label and is the second album featuring Phil Anselmo. This saw the emergence of a heavier, more aggresive sound compared to the bands four previous albums. Which thankly turns out to a step in the right direction, getting away from the glam-rock tendencies, although Anselmo still manages to incorporate some Halford style screams, but so good that they are, it doesn't matter. Listen to the end of "Cemetery Gates" whilst guitarist Diamond Darrell uses the whammy bar, and Anselmo reaches evey high note perfectly in unison with the guitar. This is a classic Pantera song, but there are plenty more on this album
The title track "Cowboys from Hell" is a real barnstormer, with a ridicously catchy blues-metal riff, which never lets up. The emergence of the famous Pantera "Power Groove" sound is evident on this song.
"Pyscho Holiday" is a favourite of mine, and features some brilliant Drumming from Vinnie Paul and some real lowdown bass grooves from Rex Brown-check out the bottom end during the guitar solo-which is also sheer brilliance. The songs outros on a thrashy style riff and gets the adrenaline pumping.
"Heresy" is a more thrash based song but I absolutely love this one. Features more Halford like screams from Anselmo and a fantastic guitar solo. Kudos also to the double-bass pedal drumming from Vinnie Paul.
"Domination" is a favourite of many Pantera fans as well as metal fans in general and it's not hard to see why. The end riff is well worth the wait!
The next couple of songs like "Shattered" "Clash With Reality" and "Medicine man", are in my opinion the weakest on the album but still excellent in their own right, it's just that they can't compare to the rest of the brilliant material. "Message in Blood", features another seriously catchy riff and is in the Pantera Power Groove mould, great song. The other ballad style song on this album after "Cemetery Gates" is "The Sleep". I love this song as well. It begins with some haunting acoustic guitar and goes into a slow chugging riff which is also very catchy and has a fantastic guitar solo. And what a way to round the album with the pulverising "The Art of Shredding", a faster thrashier number, but starts off with an awesome groovy riff. Not one of my favourites but still very good.
I thing Iove about this album is whilst it is very heavy in places, it still manages to convey melody and catchiness, due to the amazing guitar playing, great grooves played machine-like precision from the Rhythm section and the powerful, aggresive singing that never descends into noise and every word is clear. Those who have only heard the later, heavier Pantera albums may find this a little"Judas Priest" in places what with Anselmos high-pitch screaming in effect, but this is a must have album for any Pantera and metal fan.

Cowboys From Hell (4.07) This is a classic pantera song, starting off with the repeating open E string, Dimebag plays a lead over the top. The classic pantera rhythm smashes in, with Dimebag's amazing tone giving the band a unique sound. The singing here is amazing, I really like this singer and this song really does him justice. The solo fits in perfectly, with Dimebag showing off his fine skills with the solo, and the ... ...teh song Dimebag has his way and has a magnificent solo, and plays some very good interlude's!

Opening with the signature tone of Dimebag's heavily distorted six string and one of the most instantly recognisable riffs in metal: the anthemic 'Cowboys from Hell' of which the album takes its name. This album transcends head and shoulders above most of it's contemporarys in the 'thrash' genre. Phil Anselmo delivers some of his finest vocal displays demonstrating his astounding vocal range and lyrical offerings. 18 years since the recording of ... ...or beauty with lyrical content of betrayal, love and loss being as relevant as ever today as it was in nearly 2 decades ago. When paired with undeniably one of the greatest string and rhythm sections ever; the 1990 seminal metal classic delivers bone-crunching rhythm sections with melodic leads that can only attributed to one of the most influential bands to have ever graced the collective metal genre.
Featuring staple live songs such as 'Domination', ...

2. Primal Concrete Sledge: Moving on , this song is really tedious and boring, it seems like its sung with no tone. cool guitars but the lead singer has really let himself down.
3. Psycho Holiday : A bit more brutal and more like pantera but could do without the iron maiden like screeching.
4.Heresy: I actualy swear this is iron maiden, as you can gather by now i dont like iron maiden.

Advantages: Awesome songs and vocal style Disadvantages: None
This is, put quite simply, an amazing metal album. Released after their first label debut "CowboysFromHell", "Vulgar" ups the ante in everyway. Gone are the Rob Halford screams and glam-rock tendencies of "CFH". Vocalist Phil Anselmo delivers a more brutal, aggressive vocal style which suits the harder music perfectly. The great thing is, the vocals are still very defined and clear which really adds to the experience of this album.
The trio of Diamond (Dimebag on later releases) Darrell, Vinnie Paul on the Drums and Rex Brown on Bass combine to make an earth shattering and precise musical explosion, containing some of Pantera's Best work. The album has variety without being a mish-mash of styles, it is a focused record where every song has that distinct Pantera sound. They coined the phrase "Power Groove", well this album is ...
Advantages: GODS OF METAL!!! Great riffs, great vocals, great songs Disadvantages: Not much
It could be said that something in metal died with Dimebag, arguably THE greatest metal guitarist alive. Fortunately, with this 'Best Of' album, his spirit is relived, along with every one of Pantera's greatest moments (which I may add are numerous).
This compilation of the band's tracks stretch the whole length of their epic career. Simply put, this album has it all. Opening to the ground shaking riff of CowboysFromHell, the track list continues through the melodic Cemetary Gates, before approaching tracks from the inspirational album 'Vulgar Display of Power'. These include the incredible Mouth for War, This Love, the violently executed and infamous F''king Hostile, not to mention the chugging guitar line of the instantly recognisable epic, Walk.
Other tracks on the album include 5 Minutes Alone (my personal favourite) as ...
Advantages: Face melting riffs, bone crushing vocals. Disadvantages: Some key songs in Panteras legacy missing.
Pantera are a Heavy Metal band that influenced many of the current popular Metal bands. They are sadly more well known after the death of lead guitarist "Dimebag" Daryl Abbott. Hopefully this album will show people that Pantera were well worth the hype they received.
Understandably the album contains only the CowboysFromHell+ era and excludes the Glam Rock era they were so ashamed of. And that's fine as nobody remembers the glam rock days anyway. What you do get is what Pantera should be remembered for, not the conflict, the drugs or the tragic death of Dimebag. They should be remembered for the pure skill of Dimebag, the great lyrics of Anselmo and the thumping drums of Vinnie Paul (I left Rex Brown out because his bass was nothing special).
In the album you have a great range of styles covered by Pantera. From the down ...

Album Notes
Pantera: Philip Anselmo (vocals); Diamond Darrell (guitar); Rex (bass); Vinnie Paul (drums). Engineers include: Pantera, Terry Date, Matt Lane. Recorded at Pantego Sound Studio, Pantego, Texas. In the tradition of bands such as Metallica and Judas Priest, Pantera put themselves on the map with supercharged blues-based metal riffs and screaming/singing vocals. Adding groove to their artistic aggression made COWBOYS FROM HELL a landmark for the band. With the relentless "Primal Concrete Sledge," Pantera take a chance and incorporate industrial elements into their style, a risky move for a metal band in 1990. "Psycho Holiday" showcases machine-gun syncopation while "Heresy" matches thrash riffs with double bass drumming dexterity. The haunting and dramatic "Cemetery Gates" features soulful vocals and was responsible for thrusting Pantera in the metal mainstream. The outro to "Domination" makes use of an infectiously mosh-worthy progression, while a call-and-answer metal/blues riff comprises the hook in "Shattered." Drummer Vinnie Paul has a drum sound that's comparable to that of Lars Ulrich (of Metallica); both of them were heavily imitated in the early '90s. "Clash With Reality" and "Medicine Man" are studies in incorporating progressive elements into thrash structures. COWBOYS FROM HELL stood at the forefront of a new phase in heavy music; Pantera are now recognized for contributing to the development of '90s metal in the same way that Metallica did in the '80s.
