Advantages: Good quality collection at reasonable price Disadvantages: Lacks the sparkle and flair of the recordings by Kissen and Argerich
...This double CD set from Decca brings together recordings of all four Rachmaninov pianoconcertos
played by Ashkenazy and the LSO. For those people looking for a good value collection, look no
further. However, I found that No. 3 was too sluggish for my liking, taking a good ten minutes longer
than the Rachmaninov recording. Ashkenazy has also chosen the bold cadenza, unlike Rachmaninov
himself. The playing is technically excellent, but somehow lacks the sparkle of the Kissen or
Argerich recordings. This is perhaps not one for the Rachmaninov enthusiast, but excellent for anyone looking to expand their collection....

Advantages: A little known gem of a piece, performed brilliantly Disadvantages: None
...Henry Litolff is by no means a well known composer, which is a great shame as these two pianoconcertos from the Romantic era are definitely worth adding to any collection. If, like me, you enjoy
listening to virtuosic piano skills then you will not be disappointed.
Peter Donohoe puts on a polished performance, effortlessly racing up and down the piano to make this
the best recording available. The Scherzo of the No. 4 is the best known movement and is the most
virtuosic. If you enjoy pianoconcertos by Rachmaninov and Beethoven, give this a try....
