Alkanline Trio released this album in 2005 much to the joy off the vast majority of there fans. If you enjoy punk/rock/emo etc this album is defintely worth a look.
I would also recommend it to other people who enjoy music. If you enjoy a vast erray of genres i would recommend this album. It is just "hard" enough to distinguish it from pop but is not heavy enough to burst your eardrums - thankfully.
Alkaliine Trio have released another album this year called Remains which i personally didnt enjoy as much as this one. May just be me as i have lots of happy memories with this album, but if you have heard that album and enjoyed it definetly get this album.
You can pick this album up really cheaply now its 2 years old. On itunes it is £7.99 however i suspect you can probably pick it up on somewhere such as ebay or amazon for alot cheaper.
Track 1 - Time to Waste This song is one of a couple you might recognise Alkaline Trio for played very frequently on mainstream radio after its release. I personally love the instrumental beginning, this consists of a piano and gradually adds drums , after this you hear the guitars and this is when the song really starts. Its a very catchy song and will have you humming the chorus all afternoon
Track 2 - The Poison This song is slightly different, however it has similarities to other punky songs with its lyrics and rhythm. I dont enjoy
this song anywhere near as many others on the album. It is what i normally call a filler song. One that would never make a decent single but is included on the album just to bump it up. There is some good guitar chords hidden deep within there though.
Track 3 - Burn Back on form this becomes another song that might make a good single. The tunes arent as catchy as some as the other tracks but i believe these lyrics are pretty good. The really fit in with the emotion of the track. There are some good effects in this song and the track develops and is structured well.
Track 4 - Mercy Me If you have heard of or know of Alkaline Trio this is a song you defintely heard off. To sum it up i love it. The tunes are really catchy and you will be drumming the beat with your fingers or feet i would guarantee it. The lyrics are quite repetetive but this is unnoticeable and not annoying like some other repetitive tracks. This track reminds of a cross between blink 182 and greenday. Some people may wish to hang me for that and completly disagree but there is defintely resemblances between the rhythms etc.
Track 5- Deathbed Very funky and unique opening to this track- i like the bit when the instruments start to kick in. Lyrics are catchy in my opinion. Not the most popular of there tracks but i enjoy it.
Track 6 - Settle For Satin This song has a different sound and feel to the other tracks so far on the album. Its much more dismal and less upbeat compared to the other tracks to start with but progressively gets better. Sadly i dont think the song comes to much i had great expectations with the difference compared to there other tracks but i was left dissapointed. Nice to hear the two voices. Is especially good with headphone and a voice in each ear. Funky bit of instrumental near the ending though
Track 7 - Sadie Just guitars and bass start this song which sounds quite effective with the drums starting a little later. Lovely little song, not the best but not there worst a mediocre song which keeps the album flowing. I quite like it however i know a lot of people that dont so i guess this one splits most people.
Track 8 - Fall Victim Very upbeat and quick compared to the previos track Sadie. This is another song i love. Great music in this one a good range of solos by both drums and bass to keep the song flowing. Lyrics are different and so is the tone of voice in this track. Good little song
Track 9 - I Was A Prayer I struggle to enjoy this song - i just want to burst into song with madonnas lyrics (yes i know its not the same track title). Songs OK though apart from my dodgy association with Madonna. I personally dont love it, i find it quite dull boring and saming.
Track 10 - Prevent This Tragedy This is song that Alkaline Trio are well known for. Nice and varied music a mixture of everything which makes a nice change. Some good effects. Lyrics are good as far as AT go. A bit like a morbid rhyming poem put in song. Good varied voice, sounds like he actually makes an effrot in this one compared to some of there other numbers.
Track 11 - Back To Hell Very fast start, gets right to the point. However with the beginning as soon as the singing starts you cant help but feel a little dissapointed. Becomes unexciting for the verses however regains the tempo and pace for the chorus, where yet again you experience the voice in each ear fiasco. Mediocre song nothing too special.
Track 12 - Your Neck I Love this song, starts singley with singing. Music is good, lyrics are great you cant help but want to sing along which can prove annoying if you dont know the words. Yet again though AT continue with dull verses luckily however in my opinion they make up for it in the chorus in this song. Also has a good instrumental
Track 13 - Smoke Good song to end the album in it. Displays Alkaline trios instrumental talent. Has quite a slow pace, the singing especially appears to continue at this pace. I get the feeling this song is to show off the musical talent rather than the voices. However still OK Not the best song
This album is not one of those you would appreciate by listening to from beginning to end. You would defintely benefit more by playing it on itunes on a shuffle mixed in with your other tracks. Otherwise you may come out of it highly depressed! The lyrics could by some be descibed as morbid but i assure they are the norm for this genre of music and i have sadly heard much worse!
Alkaline Trio are a good band and some of there songs ae great, However many of them can simply be described as mediocre. The main tracks i recommend are Time To Waste Mercy Me Your Neck Burn
Many of there tracks can sound saming especially if you start from beginning to end.
The album is well worth a look but remember to try second hand for a much cheaper price. Its not the best album in the world and dont expect to fall in love with it. However some of there songs are certainly worth a listen - you might even enjoy them and fiind them catchy like me.
I think the best way to describe Alkaline Trio is like marmite - You either love them or you hate them
All in all the album is mediocre but dont write it off till you have tried it
