Advantages: One of the most subversive albums of all time Disadvantages: Original artwork is concealed within the booklet
It For The Money (WOIIFTM) is very much the soundtrack to this disintegration, and in many ways, was the herald for the death of the decade. Despite being recorded between August and October 1967 and released the following January, WOIIFTM places me into a particular year ('68) better than any other record.
WOIIFTM was initially conceived as Our Man In Nirvana, a collaboration between the Mothers of Invention and Lenny Bruce featuring their music and his comedy routines. Bruce had died in 1966 from a suspected morphine overdose and was a cultural hero to the 'Underground' scenes of New York and Los Angeles. Work was just beginning in the preparation of the album when FrankZappa first heard a little record called Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.
Zappa liked the record enough, but the levels to which the album was quickly ...
Advantages: A wonderfully weird album Disadvantages: Perhaps a bit to weird for some?
The Mothers first album it never had commercial potential, it even says that in the sleeve notes, though I love it and think it's ground breaking. The sleeve notes are interesting to read too telling a lot about the band.
To like this album you'd have to love FrankZappa and psychadelic rock, if you're not into the genre it will bore you stupid and "freak you out", with it's weird audio montages and drum tracks, which is probably the point.
Many of the songs on it a parodies of the sappy love songs of the time like "anyway the wind blows", and you "Didn't try to call me". But there are classic psychadelic weird songs too like "Who are the Brain police?" and "Help I'm a Rock!" that crack me up every time, I also like the song "are you hung up".
Zappa's musical genius is still revealing itself at this point and I think he was ...
Advantages: Easy to read and very informative Disadvantages: May be difficult to track down
ISBN 0-330-31625-7. This is an important number. It's the ISBN of "The Real FrankZappa Book" published by Picador. I bought this, read it, loved it, lent it, never got it back, forgot about it , then saw it in Fopps in Glasgow for a paltry £3.50, bought it, read it again, and now I'll tell you about it.
FrankZappa died of cancer about 1992/3 and was a great loss to the art world. He hd been making music since the early sixties , with the Mothers of Invention, and as a solo artist, and also became a respected classical composer. His work "The Yellow Shark" stayed on the classical charts for over twelve months following its release.
THe book is a series of recollections about Zappa's early life and how he became who he is and the aquaintances he made along the way.
The most fascinating part of this book, and the one that gives ...

Album Notes
Full performer name: Frank Zappa & The Mothers Of Invention. Personnel: Frank Zappa (vocals, guitar); Roy Estrada (vocals, bass); Ray Collins (vocals); Motorhead Sherwood (baritone saxophone, tambourine); Bunk Gardner (alto & tenor saxophones); Ian Underwood (alto & tenor saxophones, piano); Don Preston (piano); Jimmy Carl Black, Arthur Dyer Tripp III (drums). Recorded at Apostolic Studios, New York, New York. Having blown the music world's mind with the Mothers, Frank Zappa made a left turn to indulge his childhood love of doo-wop. Recording with the rest of the Mothers, he created CRUISING WITH RUBEN & THE JETS, an album of "greasy love songs and cretin simplicity." It is also an album of authentically performed doo-wop songs that might have even been hits had they been recorded a decade earlier. From the falsetto voice singing of unrequited love, street-corner background harmonies and "Earth Angel"- styled narratives in "Love Of My Life " and "Deseri" to the questionable production values, Zappa accurately recreated the doo-wop sound. In the process, he proved that there was more to his talent than a crude sense of humor.
Album Reviews
Q (8/95, pp.150-151) - 3 Stars - Good - "...this indulges solely the Mothers' affection for doo-wop, re-casting some FREAK OUT songs in that style alongside originals which intermittently transcend the nostalgia..."
